Game Thirty-Nine - Cubs 5 Mets 6
WP - Ambiorix Burgos (1-0) LP - Ryan Dempster (1-2) Save - None

There are only so many words in the English dictionary and not enough to describe the 9th inning that took place in Shea Stadium on Thursday afternoon. When the Cubs took the field to start the bottom of the 9th they were ahead 5-1, seemingly with the game well in hand. A lead off single by David Newhan started the 5-run 9th inning and for the second time in the series Carlos Delgado was responsible for the game winning run.

What will be lost in the latest debacle by the bullpen is the start Angel Guzman turned in, two 2-run home runs, one by Aramis Ramirez and the other by Angel Pagan and the solid performances of Will Ohman and Michael Wuertz. For long time readers of the CCO, this will not be a typical recap of the game.

For those that missed the bottom of the 9th, consider yourself lucky.... and here is what happened:

David Newhan singled to center to lead off the inning past Ryan Dempster. Ramon Castro flied out to right and Murton nearly doubled off Newhan at 1st. Carlos Gomez singled to center, runners on 1st and 3rd....1 out. Carlos Beltran pinch hit for Ambioriz Burgos and drew a walk to load the bases (Piniella did make a trip to talk to Dempster). Endy Chavez walked to score Newhan....5-2. Ruben Gotay singled to left, 5-3 and the bases were still loaded. Piniella lifted Dempster for Scott Eyre.

David Wright pinch hit for Shawn Green and singled to center on the first offering from Eyre....5-4. Carlos Delgado looked at ball 1 then singled to right, game over....6-5 Mets. Scott Eyre threw 3 pitches and allowed 3 runs on 2 hits.

While baseball is a team game, Lou Piniella has to make changes to his bullpen. This road trip can be summed up in one word.... BLOWN!!!

Interleague play starts on Friday with the Southsiders invading Wrigley. With the loss on Thursday, this series becomes bigger than it already was.

I thought all along we would lose 3 of 4 to the Mets, but I never thought we would lose THAT WAY. I was lucky enough to be at Dubsdread yesterday. After finishing up and going to the 19th hole for a libation, I saw video (no audio) of Lou and then Dempster and I knew immediately that we had lost the game in the 9th. I had no idea it was 5 runs until late last night. I nearly puked.

There's a VERY good chance it is going to be VERY ugly this weekend my friends. We have a hard enough time winning one game against the Sox, but after yesterday it is going to be even tougher. Then Ozzie, who says this series isn't important, ONCE AGAIN is going to juggle his roation and start Contreras on Sunday on just 3 days of rest. Him and Buerhle are easily the 2 biggest Cub haters out there.

The worst is that I work on 35th street just a few blocks away from the Cell with the vast majority of my co-workers being die hard Sox fans. I have a bad feeling that I'm going to be losing a lot of money, lunches and beer this weekend.

I'm still fuming over yesterday's fiasco. It's not so much that I can't let it go it's that I bartend and thats all that anyone was talking about last night(thanks Dumpster!)...and I live in Iowa...I can't imagine what some of you went through in the Windy City! We have to turn a new page because minus the 10-1 game this has been a dismal last couple of weeks. God I hate the white sox...almost as much as their fans.

Skid Roe...just to let you know you will not find any dates on this site. Not too sure why you logged on. Hope all is well with you and your family. And if you are a Cubs fan, welcome. If not beat it nerd.

Wow, the other day I said I thought I had seen the Cubs lose every way possible. They have proved me wrong again. I'm beginning to think our only chance may be in the Wild Card...with the money this team spent and the way it looks on paper, there was no way in hell I thought I would be saying this on May 18th. Unbelievable is right.

    Shaun:

There is a possibility of me attending the Saturday and Sunday games. I would say 50/50

I usually like to be scientific about my analysis, but this time, there's just TOO MUCH CORRELATION, and TOO MUCH EMOTION here. Had anyone realized that, out of 8 starts as a catcher, Blanco had lost 7 of Cubs' games.

I know this is a small sample size, but Blanco is showing me some bad luck or just misunderstanding of his pitchers: 87.5% losing record of 8 games. I wonder what do you guys think of Blanco's control of the games this season so far?

  • Hubert

Can we trade for the Indians BP...minus Borowski..

  • JP

Sweet Lou better get off his sweet ass and learn how to yank his pitchers! I can't stand another season of this garbage.

  • Andy Roe

    Shaun,

I thought you only drank fruity drinks?

  • Shaun

Jim are you going to any of the games at Wrigley this weekend? I think we need to grab a beer.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

It made me sick. It ruined my dinner. I sat there and drank several frozen margaritas. I am buzzed right now. Teams that loose games like that don't go to the playoffs.

  • Mark

WHAT A FREAKIN JOKE!!! That was the WORST I've EVER seen at a MLB level! NO EXCUSSES...that was pathetic! Now we have to play the Sox after that CRAP? Our bullpen better get their head out of their asses, really quickly or we're in trouble!
