Jason Marquis (3-1, 2.35/1.17) vs. Ian Snell (2-1, 1.59/1.03)

Jason Marquis will look to give the Cubs their second consecutive series win. After completing the comeback on Tuesday morning, the Cubs will have the task of winning twice on the same day….Ernie Banks would be proud.

Jason Marquis has won his last three starts with two of them coming against his former team. Marquis was one of the surprises in the first month of the season. He pitched extremely well and most importantly he kept the ball down. Marquis did not allow his first home run until his last start (Yadier Molina)….30 2/3 innings. The Cubs were able to win their first game of the year decided by 2 runs or less the last time Marquis pitched thanks to a 5-out save by Ryan Dempster. Marquis has given up almost as many walks (13) as strikeouts (14) and must improve on this ratio if he is to continue to win ballgames.

Marquis is 3-4 in 10 career starts (14 games) against the Pirates with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. He has allowed 35 runs, 30 earned, on 70 hits (10 home runs), walked 26 and struck out 44. But he is 3-2 in 5 career starts (7 games) with a 3.28 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP at PNC Park.

  • Jason Bay – 11-24 with 4 doubles, a triple, 4 home runs, 9 RBI’s and 5 walks (.458/.533/1.208)
  • Chris Duffy – 3-7 with 2 walks

Ian Snell has become the ace of the Pirates’ staff and is coming off his best outing of the season. He threw 7 shutout innings against the Reds and allowed just 6 hits. After striking out 11 in his first outing of the year he has recorded just 17 since, while walking 10. All five of Snell’s outings have been quality starts and he has not allowed more than 2 runs in any of his appearances. Teams are hitting just under the Mendoza Line…. .197 this season against Snell but right-handers are hitting .254 while lefties just .127.

In his 3 career starts against the Cubs, Snell is 1-2 with a 6.20 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP….17 earned runs on 23 hits in 24 2/3 innings.

  • Ronny Cedeno – 2-5, 1 home run and 3 RBI’s
  • Derrek Lee – 3-9, 2 doubles and 4 RBI’s
  • Aramis Ramirez – 5-11, 3 doubles, 1 RBI
  • Alfonso Soriano – 1-2, 1 home run, 1 RBI
  • Cesar Izturis – 3-5 with a RBI
