Game Twenty-One: Cubs (7-13) vs. Brewers (13-7)
Game Time - 1:20pm C.T. WGN TV, WGN Radio, XM Radio Channel 185
Location - Wrigley Field, Chicago

Ted Lilly (1-2, 2.42/0.77) vs. Ben Sheets (1-2, 5.00/1.15)

The Cubs will look to Ted Lilly to salvage the last game of the series and of the homestand....the Cubs are just 3-9 at Wrigley this season and will not play at home again until May 4th. Lilly has had a great start to the season despite being a "hard-luck-loser" to this point; he has given up a total of 3 runs in his last 2 games, both losses. Lilly enters play today second in the National League in strikeouts with 30, behind Cole Hamels with 33. The Cubs have beaten Ben Sheets once this season, this would be a good day to see a repeat performance.

The Brewers start play today 6 games over .500 for the first time since July 1, 2004 and will look for the sweep today. Ted Lilly will have his hands full and must keep the ball in the park. Lilly has allowed just 1 home run in 26 innings this season but the past two losses have been due to free passes. Lilly has walked just 3 in his last 13 innings but two of those have scored and have been the difference in the games. While 5 walks to 30 strikeouts is a great ratio, with the way the Cubs offense is playing right now, the pitching staff has little to no room for error.

Ted Lilly has pitched just 2/3 of an inning against the Brewers in his career....he struck out 1 and did not allow a hit or a walk. Lilly is 0-2 in 3 starts at Wrigley this season with a 2.84 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP.

Ben Sheets will make his second start of the season today against the Cubs. After a tremendous Opening Day start against the Dodgers, Sheets has been very pedestrian and has not posted a win in his last three starts. He allowed 5 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings against the Cubs and 8 runs, 7 earned, on 8 hits in 5 innings against the Cardinals. Sheets did hold the Astros to just 2 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings in his last start but Greg Aquino could not hold the lead and Sheets received a no decision. Sheets has had problems throwing strikes of late and has walked 5 and struck out just 6 in his last 12 innings of work.

The Cubs need to reverse a few of the bad trends they have started the season with, one being no run support for their starting pitchers....a win today would be a good way to head into an off day and a trip to St. Louis, where the Cardinals have more trouble winning home games than the Cubs do.

There is such a thing as a must win in April and it is today....

Let's Talk Cubs Baseball....

  • Anthony...I am working on the recap right now. Theriot did a good job, strong throws.

  • Anthony

Can someone who watched the game let me/us know how Theriot looked at SS defensively?

    Thanks !!

  • Ryan R

What the heck is up with the gulls? Its like an Alfred Hitchcock movie out there.

  • nick

    Heh Congrats Neil and Abby

  • Anthony

    A couple things:

    1. Looks like Abby & Neil are going to have to celebrate their anniversary more often !!

    2. Did anyone notice how many walks the Cubs pitchers gave up today? Um, that would be NONE.

    3. Keeping to my word and admitting when I am wrong, Floyd kicked butt today in the 2-hole. Touche'

    4. Please keep your fingers crossed and pray that Lou keeps Theriot in the lineup. Obviously the best case scenario is to have him in AND batting lead off, but I'll take one thing at a time.

    5. Normally I'm not this excited after winning 1 game in a series, but I honestly think, and have a feeling that, we are about to break out of the early season funk. I think we will win 4 or 5 of the next 6 and that will set us up for even more success.

  • nick

Great game today. Did anyone see Pinella's comments after the game. When asked about Theriot continueing to playing short Pinella said "Yea Theriot will be at short" then he continued to say he will be a good #2 hitter behind Soriano. Sounds like Theriot has just won a starting posistion, GOOD!

  • kitty

Love my Cubs. Live on Lake Huron. Hey it was Lake Superior that the Ed F went down in the storm. Also the GULLS ARE GULLS. NOT SEA GULLS. Only when at the Seaside. General Mistake. Like the CANADIAN Geese. incorrect. its Canada Geese. .OK

  • Tommy

i cant wait till august 9-12 when the cubs come to colorado i finally get to my first cubs game after wanting to go for 15 years now hats also great is i come home from classes and see that the cubs win big days by lee and floyd

  • agustin rexach

Well, it is a start! Cubs win, Cubs win, Cubs win! Holy Cow!

  • Hey thanks guys...yeah Jason, 14 years and counting.

    Ryan, I think he was...

  • Jason B. from AZ

    Abby & Neil,

Congrats! Nine years already? Wow...and even longer since you first met, of course.

Seems like just yesterday you were telling me about a new boyfriend. I think my first question for you was: "Hair length and musical instrument?"

If you had told me then that Neil would one day have the best Cubs website and that I would get to write columns about my favorite baseball team, I probably would have said, "what the hell is a website?"

Looks like you get to celebrate with a Cubs "W"!

  • Ryan R

Was Michael Keaton drunk for the 7th inning stretch?

  • Aaron

I understand that Jones has more experience in RF, and is a tad faster than Murton, but can anyone explain why Jones keeps playing---the guy is on par with Izzy and Cedeno---a ruiner of rallies...I can't stand having him out there.

On another note, it's very very good to see Lee get on the board with a knock, and Pie looks to be getting a lot more comfortable in there, and I really hope the Cubs hang onto him rather than send him back down---the guy's been a winner at every level, and I think he brings good energy to the team.

  • Agustin Rexach

When a player like Pie says he wants to stay in the big club even if he has to be the bat boy and has one of the best defense in the league...hits runs like hell...God let him stay.

Pie/Theriot have to play...they have the looseness this club needs. I'll just say they hit for fire, they really wanna be there.

  • Jeff from oklahoma

Anthony, thanks and I agree with you as well. Have we tried him yet at 2-hole? If Soriano or Theriot gets on base he's patient enough at the plate to let our speedsters run.

I knew not to write about Derosa our only RBI hitter, soon enough D-Lee hits a bomb. Next I'll say Lilly can't hit for ???? and he'll hit us a 3-run triple or something like that or Izzy goes 5-5 and hits for cycle!!! j/k

  • nick

This is the way we should be playing, Nice job Lee

  • Trevor

    FINALLY D-LEE!!!

  • Trevor

Aaron, both were overaggressive on the basepaths...neither play was really close. But at least they are putting the lumber on the ball. One problems at a time I guess. :)

  • Anthony

I'm about to leave the US Cellular area to go home, but wanted to comment to what Jeff said.

Jeff, I almost said the same exact thing. Another thing I have pointed out is look at his patience. He had an 8 or 9 pitch at bat ealier in the game as well. Who else on our team looks at that many pitches and makes the pitcher work? Plus, people have to remember that he plays a non-traditional power position in 2B. Is he my favorite player on the team, not right now, but he was a good acquisition who did not have a career year.

  • Aaron

I've been following online---what the hell is up with our freakin' baserunning?

Theriot and then Floyd? What's going on....can anyone tell me what happened

  • Anthony

We've had so many bad - WIERD things happen to us over the last 2 weeks. Sheets leaves the game, for whatever reason, and we score 5 runs. This could be a good sign of things to come.

Way to start it off DeRosa.

And........ so far, it looks like the Theriot experiment is working. I can't wait to see if Lou keeps him there when Soriano is back. I hope so, or batting 2nd, but still playing SS.

  • Brian

CLIFFORD!!!! But buddy, know when to say when.

  • Jeff from oklahoma

For all the DeRosa haters out there who doesn't like him or the contract we gave him, as of RIGHT NOW he is our only contributor! Maybe not the greatest signee but he's getting the job done in the field and at the plate! Take care all....

  • Brian

MLB.com gamecast says that Sheets left with a groin injury.

  • Chad Cannon

Way to go Theriot! Our bullpen better not blow this game. Lou: "Don't bring in Eyre!"

Sheets left because of a groin injury.

  • Brian

    THE RIOT!!!!

  • Nathanael

Did Sheets get hurt? ESPN Gamecast shows him getting pulled after 3.

  • Nathanael

Wow, we scored a run with a RISP!?! Gotta love Derosa!!

  • Anthony

    CONGRATULATIONS !!!!

  • Shaun

    Sorry I meant Neil....

  • Shaun

    Happy Anniversary Neal and Abby!!!!!

Also Ned Yost broke his collar bone jogging in the Wrigley area, he is fine and at the game.

  • nick

I hope you are right Abby

  • Abby

Nine years ago today (at 3:00 pm, actually), we were married on a rainy day in Orland Park. That was the start of a good thing, so maybe thats a sign....

  • nick

    LETS GO CUBBIES!!!

  • Austin

Thanks Pat, tell Ron I hope he gets better soon.

  • Shaun

Chicago Cubs Baseball is on the air...the tarps are being pulled off the field and the game is about to begin in 10 mintues, about a 70 minute rain delay.

    Season starts today :)

  • Trevor

    Nice Shaun...

  • Anthony

    Very nice Shaun

  • Shaun

The game is delayed and they arent too sure when it will start. There is a light rain, but it is constant. They said they might start before 3:00CT. Soriano is not playing due to the wet conditions. It is 47 degrees with a ton of wind, not a good day for baseball. But have we had a good day lately?

This has been your local weather report..stay tuned for Sports with Mark Giangreco.

  • Aaron

oops...I had a post on swagger or stagger that was meant for this...

Is anyone in Chicago with a weather update? Does it even look like it's going to be played today?

  • tommy

    its delayed

  • Trevor

Does anyone know if they are going to start the game on time? I don't want to leave the library to watch it if its delayed.

  • Anthony

Sitting Soriano against a very tough Sheets is not a bad idea, especially considering he has shown signs of coming out of his slump. The best news of the day is seeing Theriot at SS. This is music to my ears. I strongly dislike seeing Floyd in the 2 hole though, and as always Jones, but I like this lineup. Let's hope that Sheets is off, bc he is a STUD plain and simple.

  • nick

How is the weather there, that could be a good reason Soriano is not in the lineup

  • Today's lineup...without Soriano

    Theriot - SS

    Floyd - LF

    Lee - 1B

    Ramirez - 3B

    Barrett - C

    Jones - RF

    DeRosa - 2B

    Pie - CF

    Lilly - P
