Jason Marquis (1-1, 2.65/1.24) vs. Anthony Reyes (0-2, 5.40/1.50)

Jason Marquis might have a thing or two to prove to his former employers today. Marquis was left off of the Cardinals post-season roster last year in favor of Anthony Reyes and was not retained in the off-season. While Marquis will likely be on top of his game today, the offense has to put runs on the board and quit wasting solid pitching performances….the temperature in Chicago is supposed to reach the mid 70′s today, maybe the bats will warm up as well.

Jason Marquis picked up his first win of the season last Monday against the Padres. He allowed just 1 run on 3 hits in 6 innings while striking out 5 and walking 4 plus he had a big night at the plate. Marquis must figure out a way to limit his walks today against the Cardinals. In 17 innings this season he has walked 10 and the 4 walks he allowed against the Astros cost him the game. Marquis won his only other career start against the Cardinals and in 3 career games he is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP (2 runs on 7 hits, 6 walks and 3 strikeouts in 8 innings). Albert Pujols is 3 for 3 with a walk in his career against Marquis while Preston Wilson is 6 for 25 with 3 doubles and 4 RBI’s.

Anthony Reyes has not pitched past the 5th inning in his two starts this season (Astros and Pirates) and has given up 6 runs on 11 hits in 10 innings of work. Like Marquis, Reyes has trouble throwing strikes on a consistent basis and in order for the Cubs to be successful today they must be patient at the plate. In 2 career games (including Maddux’s last game as a Cub) Reyes is winless and in 8 innings he has given 7 free passes (2 games, 1 start, 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 4 runs on 8 hits, 7 walks and 4 strikeouts). Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez do not have an official at bat against Reyes….Lee walked in his only plate appearance and Ramirez has walked all 3 times he has faced him. Matt Murton is 1-1 (a home run) and Michael Barrett is 1-2 (a double) in their careers against Reyes.
