Spring Training Game Twenty-Two: Cubs (10-10-1) vs. Rangers (12-6)
Game Time – 3:05pm C.T. – Comcast SportsNet, XM Radio (n/a)
Location – HoHoKam Park, Mesa
Jason Marquis (1-1, 2.00) vs. Jamey Wright (0-1, 2.16)
The new 21 versus the old 21 on the 21st….have the sun and moon aligned? The Cubs and Jason Marquis face Sammy Sosa and the Texas Rangers in Mesa this afternoon….the first time Sosa has been back at HoHoKam since 2004. According to the Rangers official site, Sosa will be a part of the travel team that takes the field in Mesa. There are other former Cubs on the Rangers’ roster: Kenny Lofton, Jerry Hairston, Jr., John Koronka (Koronka was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City last Sunday) but Sammy will make all of the headlines. Sosa has already made the Rangers’ 25-man roster and has had a good spring…. .417/.421/.778/3/8/1 walk/9 k’s. He reportedly is looking forward to patrolling his old stomping grounds in right field of HoHoKam.
Jason Marquis has pitched extremely well this spring. The record does not mater but the fact he has thrown strikes does. Marquis has given up 2 runs on 11 hits in 9 innings while walking just 2 and striking out 4 with a 1.44 WHIP. He has kept the ball down and has almost a 4:1 ground out to fly ball ratio this spring (3.80).
While this is “just a spring game”, the mainstream media will be sure to make a big deal about Sosa facing the Cubs. Who knows by the time the two teams face off in the regular season (June 19th – June 21st in Arlington), Sosa might not be making any headlines.
