The Buck Stops Here

Updated - 11:55am CST with Cubs 2007 Convention Schedule

As the 22nd annual Cubs Convention kicks off this weekend, the feeling is like none prior, and no, not Mark. Usually, this weekend is a feel-good story, one filled with players from yester-year and idols from days gone by, showing up to rehash the good times as well as the opportunities lost. Normally, this weekend is about fun, family and fame, but this year, the story changes. It has been 99 years and counting, and finally, that feeling is different, it is foreign, unparalleled and unseen. Finally, the Cubs Convention is not about Ernie Banks, its not about Billy Williams, its not about Ron Santo, finally, it is about winning. Sure, those three deities will be in attendance, but like them, all we care about now is winning. And so, as the saying goes, the Buck stops here....

Harry Caray referred to it as the "unofficial opening day", some refer to it as the "kick-off to spring training", call it what you want but the bottom line is baseball is just around the corner.

The excitement and anticipation for the upcoming season was evident from the day the passes to the Convention went on sale. Despite a horrible 2006 season the 3-day event sold out in just 20 minutes, the fastest in Cubs Convention History. This year should be extremely interesting with all of the change that has taken place on the North Side of Chicago....especially the Saturday morning question and answer session with Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella.

Not only will there be current and former Cubs in attendance, there will also be representatives from the Iowa Cubs, Tennessee Smokies and Peoria Chiefs (obviously their new manager will be in attendance). XM Radio will have live broadcasts, via Holden Kushner, throughout the weekend and WGN Radio will air shows from time to time on Friday and Saturday, including Sports Central Live with Dave Kaplan on Friday night.

A couple of weeks back the Cubs announced Mark Grace would be attending this year's Convention, his first appearance since 2000, the last year he was a Cub. Grace should receive a huge ovation from the Faithful in attendance as he is a one of the most popular Cubs of all-time....and deservedly so.

The CCO will have daily recaps from all 3 days of the Convention and a big wrap up of the weekend on Monday morning. Pitchers and catchers report to Mesa in 26 days, the first game of Spring Training is 40 days away but the Convention....well it starts in just a few short hours....

The reason I'm excited is that the kid has openly offered to return the money (signing bonus) if he quits at any point during his contract. To me, that says a lot about a person's character. I'm not sure he will turn out to be a #1 Stud pitcher, but he's already a stand up classy Cub as far as I'm concerned. I'm rooting for him all the way.

    Neil and Brian,

Thank you in advance for your hard work during the conference. I/we really appreciate it. I'm looking forward to the updates

  • Ryan R

Jeff S. says he decided it was too much to play both sports. Somehow I think that the guaranteed 10 million helped a little. Hope he becomes a great addition for the Cubs in the future.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

Once again, Dayne Perry is pissing on the Cubs.

I guarantee if the Yankees, Dodgers or some other

wet dream team of his drafted Jeff S., it would have been the best thing since Bo Jackson.

  • Brian

Sorry to be Johnny Come Lately to the Party, forgot to read the comments, I was a good hour behind.

  • Brian

Jeff Samardzija has quit football and signed his five year contract with the Cubs. I was definitely wrong about that, but as a Cubs fan, I am ecstatic.

  • Nathanael

Wow, I'm really surprised about Samardzija. That's great though.

  • Jim

Jeff Samardzija forgoes football career and signs 5 year deal with Cubs. Will start at class A ball with Sandberg. I think this Kid will become a great pitcher. He can bring the heat.

  • Zip, yes we are taking the cameras and a Photo Gallery should follow.

  • Zip

Are you planning on posting any pictures like you did last year?

  • nick

Have a great time. Looking forward to seeing the post from the weekend!

  • jim (Tinley Park)

    Enjoy fellas!!!!

It is like dying and going to Cub Heaven.
