From the Wire....Jennings Traded to Houston

Updated - 4:38pm C.T. - The Non-Tender List is Beginning to Roll In

According to a report from Ken Rosenthal from FOXSports.com, the Astros have just traded Willy Taveras, Jason Hirsh and Taylor Buckholtz to the Colorado Rockies for Jason Jennings and Miguel Asencio.....a right handed pitcher.

The Astros will look to sign Jennings to a long-term deal after the prospects they just traded to Houston. Most feel this move is due to Houston losing Andy Pettitte to the Yankees last week. Jennings has stated in recent weeks he would test the market next off-season.

Also, the Texas Rangers have signed Eric Gagne to an incentive laden 1-year deal.

Update - The non-tender list is starting to roll in, the deadline is midnight tonight (11:00pm C.T.). The Braves have decided not to offer a contract to Marcus Giles according to Kevin Kennedy on XM Radio.

Will update the rest of the news and the non-tender list from Tuesday later in the evening...check back later.

All I have heard is that Giles wants to play in SD with his brother. That said, even if he is available I’m not sure how the Cubs would be able to use him. We should be looking for a CF. I would love to find a way to put him on the roster but I cant see how unless Soriano is really going to play CF, we dump JJ and Hendry backs out on giving Derosa a shot at playing 2B

How about trading Jones and Ohman for some decent prospects, sigining Giles to play 2B and hit #2, and move DeRosa to right field. Then in a couple years we can get rid of Giles and play Patterson at 2B, DeRosa will be on the bench, Murton in LF, Soriano in RF, ad Pie in CF!!!

Hmmmm Marcus Giles has not been offered a K eh?

Any chance he swings into Chicago? I think he struggled last year because they were using him as a leadoff hitter and he clearly did not thrive in that role. The Cubs don't need him to be a leadoff hitter so his average could go back up. Can DeRosa move to an outfield spot and Giles take over 2B?

    Good! Houston got ripped off!

Jennings is a good pitcher, not a #1 or #2.

They gave up too much. That would have been like the Cubs giving up Murton, Marshall and possibly Pie for only 1 year of possible service before he hits free agency. Lets face it, Hendry is paying the price for a one year rental (Pierre) already.

Houston will not be a factor this year, when they fall out of it, Jennings will be on the block.

Yes but the market will correct itself soon. He could have a great year next season and not get as much. Or he will get a huge deal because the Scott Borass's of the world keep driving up the price.

I think Jennings IS smart for not sigining long term now. After this offseason, if he pitches somewhat well, who knows how much he could make next year. And he would be smart to test the market....

What a bad move by Houston. The guys said he will test the market next offsseason. If Jennings was smart he would sign a contract in this trumped up market.

I'm a little disappointed in the fact that Houston added a pitcher to the rotation better than what's available on the FA wire, but losing Tavarez and the two pitching prospects (Hirsh especially) hurts them overall. They really needed that arm in the rotation though - more so than even the Cubs. I'd say so far as making them a better team overall, this is a wash..... which is a good thing :-)

With a little luck Clemens goes back to the northeast and they fail to sign Jennings long term :-D
