From the Wire....Gerald Perry Named Hitting Coach

Vote 0 Votes

The Cubs announced on Wednesday afternoon that former Oakland A's hitting coach, Gerald Perry, will be the new hitting coach under Lou Piniella. The hiring of Perry completes the coaching search....the new staff under Piniella will be Alan Trammell (bench coach), Larry Rothschild (pitching coach), Gerald Perry (hitting coach), Matt Sinatro (first base coach), Mike Quade (third base coach), Lester Strode (bullpen coach) and Ivan DeJesus (special assistant).

Perry was with the Pirates from 2003 to 2005 and before that he was with Piniella and the Mariners from 2000 to 2002. Gerald Perry played 13 seasons in the Majors for the Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals. Perry made the All-Star team in 1988.

Under Perry's tutelage the Pirates went from the worst hitting team in the league in 2002 (.244) to the third best in 2003 (.267). While with the Mariners they set new team records. In 2000 the Mariners took 775 free passes, in 2001 they led the league in on base percentage with .360 and in runs scored with 927.

I definatley like the Gerald Perry hire. He has proven himself to be a very good hitting coach.

As for Rothchild, the only good thing that he's done with us is turn Zambrano from very good to amazing. However, most of that was just from Carlos getting more experience.

good call Jim...I think you're right. On another note, I think this is a tremendous hire. He was the coach for ARAM---hopefully that convinces him to stay, and he coached the phenomenal Mariners team that won 116 games.

It seems like Lou is surrounding himself with some great coaches. I'm just curious as to why Rothschild is still around, other than the fact he seems to be butt buddies with Hendry---curious---they even look similar to each other....I can't think of one single pitcher that Rothschild has turned around since he's been here. Can anybody else? If anything, they've gotten worse under his command. Rick Kranitz would've been a great hire. Plus, when Baker came in, he brought Pole with him, so it was like he was hoping Rothschild would be let go, but Hendry stuck with him. What the hell is up with this guy? I don't like Hendry at all...he's the type of guy that plays favorites---you know---the high school baseball coach type that plays the worst second baseman in the league because his daddy donates thousands of dollars to the school every year and sits the standout second baseman on the bench (still bitter about that)---but does anyone else get that vibe from him? He rewards mediocrity with extensions, and holds everyone else accountable but himself. It's like he can do no wrong.

What the hell as he done anyway? He plundered the happless Pirates for ARAM and Lofton for a generous amount of cracker jacks....we outbid everyone else that was offering triscuits I guess. I mean, the Pirates would've given them away to anyone interested at that time. He did pull a rabbit out of his hat to get Garciappara, but again, the Red Sox were practically giving him away anyhow. As for the D Lee trade. Alright, I'll give him that. He traded a guy with brain damage from a concussion in Choi for a high potential guy in Lee. I'll applaud him for that. But what about the ARAM contract, the trade for Pierre and not locking him up, and not firing Rothschild, putting too much faith in Wood and Prior to be healthy, trading C Patterson for cracker jacks....ditto Sosa....not signing Nomar when he wasn't guaranteed anything with the Dodgers either (what, we didn't have enough room for him? please), and not trading for anyone when Lee went down and it was obvious the team needed a lift. In his trades, Hendry always gets crap, and doesn't pull the trigger when a player's value is high. Why is he still there. Stevie Wonder would do a better job at the helm than this happless clown, trying to lead the team blindly down a path of mediocrity.

I believe Gerald Perry is the guy who back in 1983

while playing for Atlanta in a game against the Cubs, hit a couple of HR's and Le Elia had no idea

of who he was. Perry his now a coach and Elia maybe a scout for the Cubs.
