Henry Blanco resigns with the Cubs and Lou Piniella at the GM Meetings

According to several reports out of Chicago, the Cubs have resigned Henry Blanco for a 2-year deal with a mutual option for 2009. Blanco will serve as the backup for Barrett and the deal is thought to be worth in the neighborhood of $5 million dollars.

Also, XM Radio is reporting that Lou Piniella is one of only two managers (Charlie Manuel of the Phillies) that is at the GM Meetings in Florida. Jim Hendry asked him to come up for the day (Wednesday) to meet with a couple of free agents the Cubs are interested in signing. As reported, Alfonso Soriano is in Florida today (Wednesday) to meet with the Phillies.

  • Trevor....I stumped. I think this may just be one of those internet rumors. I cannot find anything from a reliable source.

If I find it, it will be posted as a new article.

  • Trevor

I've scoured everywhere for that trade Neil and haven't found it actually happen yet. If its confirmed already please tell me where this breaking news is occurring!

  • O.K. Brandon, please explain that one...you've got me. Where did you read/hear that?

  • brandon

did u guys hear jake westbrook for sean marshall and michael wuertz thats what we got world series here we come

  • Larry...good call I just heard the same from Holden Kushner. He said that Meche would be the next pitcher signed by the Yankees.

Wes Helms signed with the Phillies.

  • Hubert

Gil Meche = Terrible name. 95mph heat, no breaking ball, no thanks.

Vicente Padilla = 15-10 in a friendly hitting park in Texas, I'd like him as a #3 or #4.

Barry Zito = 85mph fastball + most walks in AL last year; I'm tired of all the walks last yr, no thx.

Jason Schmidt = Consistent power righty, VERY accurate with his fastball, can paint the corners with 95mph heat and a filthy change. Get him.

Miguel Bautista = Ionno, haven't really seen him.

    Other than that...can someone travel back in time and tell Hendry not to include Ricky Nolasco and his 95+ mph heat that paints the corners in the Pierre deal -_-;;

  • Larry

I just heard a report on xm radio that says the Yankees are on the verge of signing Meche to be part of their rotation. They want to get the Musina deal done first, but they think Meche will be in the Bronx next season. It doesn't hurt my feelings, I didn't want to see him playing for the Cubs next year.

    A few thoughts.

    * I also applaud the re-signing of Hank White, not much of a stick, although he had some moments. His defense is exceptional.

    * I would love to see the Cubs pawn Jones off to the Pirates for Zack Duke. I wouldn't mine if they traded him to the Mets for Heilman or Oliver Perez.

    * If the cubs landed Soriano for CF I wouldn't mine seeing them get Jose Guillen, J.D Drew, Austin Kearnes for RF. I also heard that Adam Dunn is available. Hmmmmm

  • Steve

I definatly like the Henry Blanco resigning if for nothing else I get to yell "Hank White" for a while longer (classic nickname). Seriously though, he is a tremendous defensive catcher and has proven that he can step in and do a fine job in an everyday role as well.

thank you Trevor.....that's what I've been saying too, and nobody believes me....Look, Pittsburgh has a need for power, we have Jones....Why not trade Jones, Bynum, Cedeno, and maybe someone else for one of their lefty starters and a reliever. Then, we'd have many trading partners with the Red Sox and Yankees being two big suitors looking for relief and starting pitching respectively. I'd spin the lefty starter to the Yankees, perhaps in a longshot deal to land AROD, or that Humberto Sanchez they acquired from the Tigers, who by all accounts, and friends of mine that have faced him in the minors, is a flamethrower...So you throw him in Triple-A, bide time with Wade Miller in the rotation...if he tears it up, then you make a trade deadline deal and bring him into the rotation, and have even more depth on your roster.....creativity, that's what it's all about....it's thinking big picture, and a lot of people it seems have narrow-minds.

Notice, I said, "longshot" deal for AROD--so don't blast me for that one.

    Look, here's what I know:

-the Marlins have a lot of pitching depth, so if anything, they'll be looking to acquire a bat

-the Pirates have a stocked rotation, but a poor lineup, so they'll need a bat

    -the Yankees need pitching

-the Red Sox need relief pitching

These are really the only 4 teams I could see us trading much with. Rumor has it Wily Mo Pena is available, and you know Manny is always available, though I don't see the Cubs going after another head case like that like they had with Sosa. As for the Yankees, I think trading AROD might appease everyone involved, and the Pirates and Marlins would just be trade partners to spin their prospects in a trade with the Yankees or Red Sox

We've only added one player but A-Ram and Hank White were great re-signings. Its not easy to keep your free agents in this age of overpaid players in the market. So it may not be an "addition" in the technical sense, its sure better than a subtraction, and even more pressure at the managers meetings.

Its Day 3. Take a deep breath and relax. JH has done well by resigning key Cubs players, making a quick addition, and putting Lou right at the forefront of the meetings. All of this should work in the Cubs favor as it shows top tier free agents the Cubs are serious about winning.

I look for Meche or Lily to be the next signing. And I still think a trade for a left handed pitcher from Pittsburgh may be in the works.

  • Zach

Another good move by JH. Hank is one of the better backups in the league.

I also like that Lou is down in Florida. By him being there, any free agents the Cubs meet with get to hear what the manager has to say and not just the GM telling them what they want to hear.

Even though we've actually only added 1 player it's just nice to see some things get done relatively quickly after enduring some of the offseasons we've had in years past. Let's just hope JH doesn't get gun shy and keeps the ball rolling towards bigger and better things.

  • Hubert

Good. When he plays, the staff's ERA heads far far far south. Also...Hendry should meet with Soriano as soon as possible.

  • nick

Very glad they kept Henry. Who is it giong to be today?
