Game Time – 6:10pm C.T. Comcast Sports Net, WGN Radio, XM Radio Channel 186
Location – Great American Ballpark, Cincinnati
Rich Hill (6-6, 4.12) vs. Chris Michalak (1-3, 4.88)
The last 4 road games of the season….Tonight is a rematch of last Saturday’s match-up between the two lefties. Rich Hill threw a gem and recorded the first complete game of the season for the Cubs. The Reds have not been officially eliminated from playoff contention yet, they enter play tonight 5 games back with 5 teams in front of them, so the likelihood of them making the post season is very slim at best. The Cubs could end their season, officially, with a series win in the Queen City this weekend, the 4-game set concludes on Monday. Rich Hill threw the best game of his big league career last Saturday against the Reds. He held them to just 2 hits and struck out 10. Hill, along with Ryan Theriot and Matt Murton, have been very refreshing to watch down the stretch and all 3 should be in the starting lineup with the lefty Michalak taking the hill for the Reds. Rich Hill has been spectacular this month and has shown all the promise that the Cubs held for him. In 4 starts this month he is 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA. He has given up just 3 earned runs in 30 innings and in his last 5 starts his ERA is 0.97….the last time he gave up more than 1 earned run was on August 21st against the Phillies. In his last 37 innings he has given up just 21 hits, 6 walks and has struck out an astonishing total….35, that almost a 6 to1 ratio.
The Cubs chased Chris Michalak in the 5th inning the last time they faced him. In 4 2/3 innings he gave up 3 runs, 2 earned, on 7 hits.
The Cubs have many reasons to finish this horrible season on a positive note. Many think the roster may be set for next season but maybe under different leadership the result will be different, but it is highly unlikely. The Cubs are about to enter probably the most important off-season in recent history….if they go one way they could be the next coming of the Atlanta Braves, if they go the other it could be the “Further Adventures of the Loveable Losers”….
