The last weekend of Summer, Barry Bonds and the Giants….the Cubs start a 7-game homestand today that will conclude next Thursday with the last game of the season against the Pirates. Another “Battle of the Lefties”….Rich Hill is coming off the best start of his career; he made one mistake against the Cardinals last Saturday and allowed just 1 run on 4 hits in 7 innings. Hill had a very good month of August and finished with a 3-2 record and a 3.38 ERA. With the rosters expanding there is little to no reason for the Cubs to continue to abuse their bullpen over the last month of the season. After the day off, the bullpen should be a little rested but another quality start from Hill would go along way at ending the speculations about whether or not he is ready to take his game to the next step. Hill is throwing strikes and has walked just 3 in his last 2 starts while striking out 8….very close to 3 to 1. Hill is 0-1 in 2 games with a 5.73 ERA in his career against the Giants and was beaten by the Giants this season. Hill gave up 5 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings of work back on May 20th, his 2nd start of the season.
Another lefty to give the Cubs offense problems….Lowry is a very good lefty, unlike most of the Southpaws that have embarrassed the Cubs this season. He is 2-0 in his last 5 starts with a 1.86 ERA, just 8 earned runs in 38 2/3 innings. After a rough July, Lowry settled back down in August and even threw a complete game shutout against the Diamondbacks on August 21st. He has allowed just 1 run in his last 17 innings. Lowry is 1-1 in 3 career games against the Cubs with a 3.32 ERA. The Cubs will have their hands full today with Lowry and they will need another excellent performance from Hill to have a chance at ending the losing streak today.
