Location – Wrigley Field, Chicago

Juan Mateo (1-0, 3.00) vs. Chris Carpenter (11-6, 3.09)

The last game of the year for the Cardinals at Wrigley and only 3 games left next weekend in St. Louis between the two rivals. Today rookie Juan Mateo gets another start against a former Cy Young award winner. Mateo is coming off an impressive start against the Astros on Tuesday and if not for the bullpen would have clearly won his 2nd big league game, he out pitched the Rocket, how will he handle Chris Carpenter and the Cards today?

Before we get to the rest of today’s match-up, there was a wonderful rumor in Sunday morning’s Chicago Sun-Times about the Detroit Tigers interest in Neifi Perez. The Tigers apparently tried to trade for former Cub, Mark Grudzielanek and were unable to do so, he has since signed an extension. Now according to the Sun-Times, the Tigers are looking at Perez while Placido Polanco recovers from injury….PLEASE MAKE THIS TRADE!!! The Cubs inserted Ryan Theriot at 3rd base on Friday, he played shortstop in the Minors, he would take Neifi’s spot on the roster….PLEASE MAKE THIS TRADE!!! Now back to the game….

Carpenter is coming off of a complete game shutout against the Reds. He allowed just 4 hits, struck out 6 and did not walk a batter….all on 107 pitches. The outing against the Reds marked the first time since July 25th he had not given up at least 4 runs and as many as 6. Carpenter is 0-1 in two starts against the Cubs this season with a 4.50 ERA. This will be the first time this season that Carpenter has not faced Zambrano when pitching against the Cubs. He and Zambrano had a very good duel back on Opening Weekend in Chicago. Carpenter threw 6 innings of shutout ball, allowed only 4 hits and struck out 9. On July 30th the Cubs got to Carpenter early and chased him from the game after 4 innings….the Cubs were able to get 5 runs on 6 hits that day, remember that was the game Albert Pujols was scratched just before game time just to be inserted as a pinch hitter for Jim Edmonds later….never believe Tony LaRussa, first with the White Sox and now the Cards….you make the conclusion.

Juan Mateo has looked good on the mound the 2 games he has started for the Cubs and was impressive against Roger Clemens and the Astros last Tuesday….especially when he gave the Rocket some of his own medicine. Mateo allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and walked just 1. The Cubs need a quality start from the young right-hander with Rich Hill and Ryan O’Malley scheduled to pitch on Monday and Tuesday respectively. Mateo threw strikes against the Astros, at one point 27 of the first 37 he threw were strikes, he will need to be just as aggressive and effective today for the Cubs to have a chance at a series win and to top their All-Time season series record against the Cardinals at Wrigley.
