Mark Prior (1-5, 6.64) vs. Doug Davis (7-6, 5.01)

The last game of the year in Milwaukee….and will the real Mark Prior please stand up? Prior is scheduled to take the mound today and will look to pickup where he left off last Saturday against the Pirates. Prior was very impressive until he “hit the wall” in the 6th and must build on that last start. Prior is one of the huge question marks for the Cubs over the last 6 weeks of the season, the Cubs need to see Prior be successful and finish the year healthy and on the active roster. Unfortunately for Prior the Cubs will face lefty Doug Davis who is 1-1 this season against the Cubs.

Mark Prior has taken a lot of heat this season and thrown little. Prior has not pitched anywhere near his previous form and has had incredible control problems. Prior has reportedly changed the grip on his curve ball and will look to throw it will a little more command than in previous starts. Prior has shown improvement in 2 of his last 3 starts but has not been successful in back-to-back starts in over a year. Prior must start pitching the way he is capable of and continue to show the Cubs what they expect to see from their very talented right-hander.

The Cubs must be patient against Davis and take the walks he will give them. Davis is second in the league behind Carlos Zambrano in walks allowed and in his last 43 innings he has given up 24 free passes and struck out only 28. Davis beat the Cubs back in April but they roughed him up at Miller Park in July. The Cubs scored 7 runs on 7 hits in just 5 1/3 innings and collected 6 walks. Davis struggled last month despite having a winning record (2-1, 5.54 ERA) but he is coming off a win against the Cardinals in which he allowed only 3 runs on 6 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Look for Jacque Jones to make the start in right today, Jones is 5-11 lifetime against Doug Davis.
