Update at the Break from the Farm

Rich Hill is scheduled to start the game for the Pacific Coast League All-Star team on Wednesday night in Toledo, Ohio. Hill is tied for second in the league in strikeouts (107) and has held opponents to a .183 batting average. Geovany Soto and Kerry Ligtenberg were also named to the squad but Ligtenberg will be unable to attend due to prior commitments.

The 2006 Southern League All-Star (AA) game took place on Monday night at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama. Several members of the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx participated in the game. Chris Walker (CF), Scott Moore (3B), Nic Jackson (RF) and Juan Mateo (P) started the game, Eric Patterson, Miguel Negron (RF), Chris Shaver (P) and Rocky Cherry (P) all played for the North All-Stars as they beat the South All-Stars, 9 to 4. Juan Mateo picked up the win, he threw one scoreless inning, struck out one and gave up a hit. Scott Moore went deep twice in the game, once in the 5th a 2-run shot and again in the 7th a solo shot. Moore was 3 for 4 with 2 home runs, 4 RBI’s, 2 runs scored and a walk….Scott Moore was named the game’s MVP.

2006 Southern League All-Star Game – Chris Walker was 1 for 3 with a run scored, and Eric Patterson, Nic Jackson and Miguel Negron were held hitless in the game. Chris Shaver gave up a run on 4 hits in an inning of work and Rocky Cherry threw a perfect inning of relief.

Sean Gallagher had his best outing as a member of the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on July 8th. Gallagher improved to 4-1 since his promotion to AA and allowed just 2 hits and struck out 12 while walking just 2 in 7 shutout innings and combined with Federico Baez for the 11th shutout thrown by Diamond Jaxx pitching this season.

Mark Watson was traded last month to the Oakland A’s, the Cubs did not announce who they received in return at the time. The Cubs received a player to be named later for the lefty Watson.

Andrew Shipman was demoted to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on June 28th from the Iowa Cubs. Shipman had a 3.13 ERA in 29 games for the I-Cubs.

Jae Kuk Ryu was placed on the DL on July 6th after turning his ankle in last Wednesday’s game against New Orleans. Ryu was unable to participate in the Future’s Game that took place on Sunday.

Iowa Cubs - The I-Cubs will come back from the break having won 5 of their last 6 and 16 of their last 25 and are just 3 games back of the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers) for first place in Northern Division of the American Conference of the Pacific Coast League. The I-Cubs are 44-45 on the season. (report)
