Carlos Zambrano (10-3, 3.11) vs. Tom Glavine (11-3, 3.52)

Tonight is another rematch….Zambrano vs. Glavine Round II. The All-Stars faced off 10 days ago and Zambrano and the Cubs beat Glavine 9-2. Zambrano was spectacular allowing only 2 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings of work to the high-powered Mets offense. Zambrano recorded 7 strikeouts and walked 4. Zambrano has been just short of brilliant and has not lost since the end of May, it would be great to see Z take a bite out of the Big Apple tonight.

Carlos Zambrano has been arguably the best pitcher in baseball since May 31st, the last time he was beaten. He has won 7 straight and has held his opponents to 2 runs or less in 12 of his last 15 starts and the other 3 starts were not blowouts by any stretch. The only team to score more than 4 runs off of Zambrano during this stretch was the White Sox on July 2nd. Like most of the Cubs staff Zambrano has received little to no run support all season and could easily be shooting for his 16th straight victory….he has pitched that good. Zambrano is 4-0 in July with a 3.81 ERA (because of the Sox game that number is inflated, he has allowed only 4 runs in his last 3 starts) and in 26 innings he has given up 17 hits and 14 walks while striking out 29. He must throw strikes and the Cubs must score enough runs to support their ace. Zambrano leads the NL with 141 strikeouts.

The Cubs handed Glavine his first defeat since April 24th ten days ago but look for him to bounce back tonight against the Cubs. Glavine had lost only once to the Cubs in his career before July 15 and is 14-2 with a 3.46 ERA in his career. Glavine has not won a ballgame in over a month, June 23rd against the Blue Jays, and has allowed a lot of hits over that span. Over his last 22 2/3 innings Glavine has given up 33 hits and 10 free passes, the Cubs showed very good patience at the plate against him the last time the two faced off and they must do that again. The Cubs scored 3 runs on 4 hits in 5 innings and Glavine struck out 3 and walked 3.

Dusty announced on Monday that Todd Walker will start against the Mets in the last two games of the series. Aramis Ramirez is in the zone right now having hit 6 home runs in the last 5 games and after a huge weekend in D.C. he will look to continue that tonight….Ramirez is 9-18 in his career versus Glavine with two doubles and two home runs.
