Will the Cubs be able to win two in a row? It has been two weeks since the Cubs won back-to-back games and tonight the offense will not get any help. The Astros send Roger Clemens to the mound and although he is 0-2, do not let that fool you, he has been sharp and like last season he is not receiving any run support. Clemens has given up a total of 3 earned runs in 11 1/3 innings while the Astros’ offense has scored 2 runs in his two starts. Clemens has not yet gained his command and the Cubs need him to wait another start to do so. Clemens has walked 4 and struck out 7 in his two starts.

The Cubs offense has been doing their part as of late but shaky starting pitching and horrible relief pitching have resulted in only 2 wins in their last 8 games since Derrek Lee returned on June 25th. The Cubs are hitting .306 (88-288) with 39 runs scored and could have easily won their last six. As good as the win was for the Cubs on Sunday, they still allowed Sox to score 11 runs on 14 hits and have not put together a complete game in weeks.

Carlos Marmol pitched a very good game his last time out against the Brewers but the bullpen faltered before the offense bailed them out. Marmol allowed only 1 run (and that was an inherited run that Scott Eyre could not keep from scoring) on 3 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Marmol threw his best game since his first Major League start on June 11th in Cincinnati/ Marmol faced the Astros on June 6th and in 2 innings of work. he gave up 2 hits and struck out 3.

In the last ten games only the Cincinnati Reds (5-5) in the Central have a record of .500 or better. The Astros have struggled this season almost has bad as the Cubs, the Astros have not had to deal with the injuries the Cubs have had this season and have not played good ball on a consistent basis. The Cubs are 1-5 against the Astros this season they have dropped their last 5 in a row against Houston. The Astros are much better at home (25-18) than on the road (15-24) but the Cubs have a better road record (16-26) than home record (14-25). The Cubs have and can beat the Rocket, it just depends what team shows up tonight in the Juice Box.

Let’s Talk Cubbies Baseball….
