The half way point to the season is almost upon us, the All-Star Break is just around the corner and the trading deadline is 30 days away….this team could possibly look a lot different a month from now. Who will stay and who will go? One name that has been mentioned of late is Greg Maddux and he takes the hill today for the Cubs against the team from the ‘Wrongside’ of Chicago. Maddux has pitched well of late but his early inning struggles and lack of support has cost him in his last 3 games and he has had the worst two months of his Hall of Fame career. After a stellar start of the season, Maddux has only won twice in the last two months and is 2-8 with a 6.78 ERA in his last 11 starts. Maddux has to give the Cubs offense a chance to play with a lead, if he has his typical rough start….it could be a long afternoon for the Cubs on Fox.
Javier Vazquez has been equally as bad in his last 5 starts and his last time out against the Astros he gave up 9 runs on 10 hits in 6 innings of work. Against the Cardinals on June 20th, he surrendered only 2 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings of work, his best start in June. Vazquez was 2-1 with a 7.50 ERA in 6 starts last month and is 3-3 with a 4.81 ERA in his career against the Cubs.
The Cubs have to start hitting with runners on base. The last four games have been filled with opportunities but only one time were they successful. A back-to-basics approach must be taken….the lack of fundamentals displayed by this team over the past several years has hit an all-time low and the players are the only ones that can correct the problems.
