Derrek Lee to Return to Cubs on Sunday according to KXNO

Updated - 11:01pm C.T. - The Associated Press Confirms Lee's Return

KXNO in Iowa, play-by-play for the Iowa Cubs, just reported during the 8th inning of the I-Cubs game against the Omaha Royals at 9:49pm C.T., that due to the injuries on Saturday night to Tony Womack and Freddie Bynum, Derrek Lee will rejoin the Cubs on Sunday in Minneapolis to take on the Twins. Lee was removed from the game in the 8th inning of a 10-4 loss in front of a record crowd of 13,103 to watch what was thought to be the first of two rehab games for Derrek Lee at Principal Park for the Iowa Cubs.

Derrek Lee went 1 for 4 with an RBI but played a big part in the I-Cubs 3-run 1st inning that put them ahead until the 4th inning when the Royals scored 5 runs off of Randy Wells.

Lee hit in his familiar third spot in the lineup on Saturday night and made an impact in the 1st inning. Ryan Theriot led off the 1st with a single to left and following a walk to Felix Pie, Derrek Lee grounded out to first base and advanced Theriot and Pie. They later scored the tying runs on a double by Micah Hoffpauir. How many times this season have the Cubs failed to do a little, fundamental thing like hitting behind the runners to put them in scoring position? The I-Cubs scored 3 runs in the 1st inning.

Lee grounded out to short in the 3rd on a 3-1 count and in the 5th after another lead off single by Ryan Theriot, Lee singled to center to score Theriot who had advanced on a fielder's choice off the bat of Felix Pie. Pie did single in the 9th to extend his hit streak to 5 games. In the 7th, his final at-bat, Lee grounded out to short on a 1-2 count. Luis Montanez replaced Michael Restovich in left in the 8th, Restovich moved to first base and Lee left the game on what was thought at the time to be a routine move. The I-Cubs announcers then stated that Lee was removed because he was on his way to Minneapolis to meet up with the Cubs and he would not play in Sunday's game against the Royals. The I-Cubs announcers stated the injury to Tony Womack as being the main reason for Derrek Lee not continuing his rehab on Sunday in Iowa and later added the injury to Freddie Bynum being another cause of cutting his rehab short.

The Cubs have not confirmed this information and as soon as more information is released I will update this article. The return of Derrek Lee could not have come soon enough and a lineup that consists of Lee, Aramis Ramirez and Phil Nevin could be very exciting to watch on Sunday.

Update - The Associated Press just confirmed the earlier article here at the CCO, Derrek Lee will return to the Cubs lineup on Sunday.

Doesn't matter if Lee is back. He still needs to get back to being used to facing MLB pitching, just like Wood's shoulder needs to get used to pitching, and Prior needs to gain his command back. The Cubs will be back in '07 if they get some major thump in the lineup in the forms of Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano and some decent starting pitching. Also Marshall is starting to wear on me, I think scouts have figured him out and MLB teams are starting to hit him hard.

  • Hey Jim...it's a start and Prior pitched a good game tonight....they could not score any runs and support him.

Wow! Maybe he will help as much as Prior & Wood have. When Miller comes back maybe, start printing the playoff tickets-NOT.
