Greetings again from the Queen City, I am in Cincinnati and will be attending the next two games…the phrase “must-win game” has been used to many times this season in relation to the Chicago Cubs considering tonight’s game is number 60 out of 162, but it is. The Cubs reached a season low after Thursday night’s loss to the Reds and are now 13 games below .500 and have scored just 1 run in the last 18 innings and totaled just 15 hits in the last 3 games. The Cubs have made a hobby out of making young pitchers look like Hall of Famers and tonight the future Hall of Famer must step up and lead his team to victory. Greg Maddux has 1 win in his last 7 outings and it was against the Reds on May 30th, the last time they lost a ballgame….it is time for bookends. To say Maddux has struggled of late would be an understatement he has been just plain awful with the exception of two starts. In five of his last seven starts he has allowed at least 5 runs and in three of his last four starts he has allowed 6 earned runs….since April 28th he has only recorded 18 strikeouts while giving up 12 base on balls….in April his strikeout to walk ratio was 4 to 1. Maddux has beaten the Reds twice this season and in 11 2/3 innings has allowed 4 runs on 10 hits, walked 2 and struck out 8. Maddux must keep the Reds in the park and his defense must not give them any extra outs. Maddux and the Cubs both need the win but more importantly the bullpen needs a quality start out of Maddux….after a much-publicized April he has not pitched deep in his starts and since then he has only pitched past the 7th inning once and made it through the 6th inning once as well. Maddux is 20-15 with a 3.61 ERA in 49 career games against the Reds.
The Cubs will face Elizardo Ramirez who lost to the Cubs back on May 29th. In 6 innings of work Ramirez allowed 4 runs on 9 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Ramirez is coming off a very good outing on June 4th against the Astros when he only allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings of work and has pitched descent for the Reds all season.
The Cubs must get the offense back on track and Juan Pierre must lead the way, until he starts hitting the Cubs will continue to have multiple game losing streaks. The thunder the Cubs had in their lineup when they went to Houston must have stayed there….they have to turn this season around soon….there are not to many tomorrows left, the Cubs must win tonight in Cincinnati.
Check Back throughout the weekend for new photo galleries and who knows what else….
