Capuano Brews Another Gem

Game Seventy-Five – Cubs 0 Brewers 6

After being swept by the Twinkies at the blah Metrodome, you would think the Cubs would come back to Wrigley with a little excitement. Maybe give one of the top five players in the game D-Lee the homecoming he deserves. A nice “W” on a chilly night on the North Side of Chicago. Well wake up, not this team and not this year. After taking two out of three from the Tribe at the Jake, the Cubs have looked hopeless the last four games. The Cubs play the next four games against the Brewers at The Unfriendly Confines. And with Maddux on the mound tonight you always think you have a shot to put one in the left column. But he made two mistakes all game, just two and that cost the Cubs the game. A pitcher should be allowed to hang a slider that gets taken out the park every now and then. But on Monday night that is all that was needed. The Cubs lost to the Brewers 6-0….dropping their 4th straight and 8th straight at home.

Maddux was on the mound on Monday taking on Chris Capuano and the Brewers. The Brewers have been giving the Cubs fits for years and Monday was no different. In the top of the first, Maddux struck out Rickie Weeks and Bill Hall (50% of his name consists of the letter L)….Maddux looked to be on cruise control. Geoff Jenkins then singled to left and El Caballo, Carlos Lee stomped to the plate and on a 0-2 pitch hit a shot to deep left. The Cub Killer did it with the White Sox and now he contiues doing it with the Brewers. I don’t know about you but he would look great in Cubbie Blue next year, he obviously loves to play at Wrigley. Prince Fielder flied out to left to end the inning, Brewers 2 Cubs 0.

In the bottom of the 2nd Pierre lined out to Jenkins, Perez reached 1st on a bunt single. Neifi went three for four on Monday, guess who will be in the line up on Tuesday. And finally Derrek Lee is batting in the 3 spot at Wrigley Field. After the crowd gave D-Lee a standing ovation, he grounded into an inning ending double play. To be honest I don’t think I would have accepted anything less than a homerun to Waveland Ave. It was still great to have him back at home. Welcome back D-Lee, you were missed….a lot.

The Cubs had another opportunity to score in the 3rd with Pierre at third, Neifi at first with two outs and D-Lee had the opportunity to be the hero. And I mean getting a base hit that would mean scoring a run, just one. But he struck out looking an outside fastball. D-Lee was surprised and so was I; my TIVO and I both confirmed that the ball was outside.

With the score still 2-0 in the 6th, the Cubs once again flirted with the idea of scoring a run. Perez led off the inning with a single to center, D-Lee also singled to center….runners on 1st and 2nd, no outs. Aramis stepped to plate and quickly erased all hopes and hit into a double play. Nevin grounded out to short to end the inning.

In the top of the 7th the Brewers tapped this game as Prince Fielder hit a moon shot to deep center, old Cubbie Damian Miller singled to left and hitting in the eighth spot center fielder Gabe Gross???? Yes Gabe Gross also homered to make the score 5-0. Maddux and the Cubs would get out of the 7th….he retired the final two batters on ground outs. That was it for Mad Dog, he pitched 7 innings gave up 5 runs on 7 hits. He tied his season high with 7 K’s and walked none. Maddux pitched a good game, he just made a couple mistakes and unfortunately one is two many with this squad.

Will Ohman took over for Aardsma in the ninth and gave up another homer to Prince, not the symbol, Prince Fielder. I don’t think I have ever seen someone swing at a pitch that hard in my life. And that includes Sosa, even when he would swing so hard and miss he was looking out of his ear hole. I mean he crushed that ball, I think his dad Cecil caught it, in Japan. Brewers 6 Cubs 0.

With Capuano coming to the mound in the 9th he was about to pitch 18 consecutive shutout innings against the Cubs, dating back to April 30th. D-Lee singled to left, Aramis hits a shot back to the pitcher and reached on an infield single. After Aramis hit one off of Capuano he was taken out of the game in favor of Derrick Turnbow. I would be embarrassed to get struck out by this guy. He looks like he belongs in the Sunday Funnies. But I guess comic strip characters get it done against our boys in blue. Turnbow got Nevin to ground into a fielder’s choice and Cedeno and Jacque Jones both struck out. Brewers 6 Cubs 0.

There were a couple of good things that happened on Monday night, D-Lee came home and played 1st base for the first time in two months. Lee finished the night 2-4…..Welcome back!! Maddux pitched a good game and is now 25th on the most innings pitched list with just over 4500 innings….he passed Fergie Jenkins on Monday. Maddux has pitched 4500 innings and has never been on the DL with an arm injury. I guess when they say they don’t make ’em like they used to, they aren’t kidding.

There was a kid at the game tonight that was holding up poster board in the bottom of the 9th that read “FIRE DUSTY”. My question to you is, what other options do we have? Look at what Girardi is doing in Florida, Leyland in Detroit, Ozzie for the last two years on the South Side. Something must be done. Let me know what you think, I think you know what I think.

Until next time….But Always GO CUBBIES!!!
