The Draft - Day One

The 2006 First-Year player draft concludes today in Houston and the Cubs took 15 total players on Day One. The Cubs selected outfielder Tyler Colvin with the 13th overall pick in the first round on Monday and right handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija in the 5th round, Samardzija was listed as the second best athlete among college prospects in the draft according to Baseball America and will play both baseball and football.

Of the 15 players they selected on Day One 6 were pitchers, 3 infielders, 2 catchers and 4 outfielders....

    I read in two separate reports that Colvin was closer to a 100 - 200 range prospect, NOT 13. I also read in today's paper that he himself was shocked to be picked in the first round. I wonder if not having a 2nd-4th round pick was a factor in drafting this kid in the first round.

    We won't know for many years, but right now this doesn't look like a good pick in my humble opinion.
