According to several reports out of Chicago on Wednesday afternoon the Cubs traded Jerry Hairston, Jr. to the Texas Rangers for Phil Nevin. Hairston was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles last off-season in the Sammy Sosa trade and never played to his full potential with the Cubs and was only hitting .206 this season.

Phil Nevin was traded to the Texas Rangers last year for Chan Ho Park and is only hittin .216 this season for the Rangers, but his 9 home runs and 31 RBI's will be a welcome addition. Nevin will give Dusty a good right handed bat off the bench and Nevin has played first base, third base, catcher and some outfield.

Update - The deal also will include cash from the Texas Rangers and some reports are stating that the Rangers will pay the difference between Nevin's $10 million dollar contact and Hairston's $2.3 million dollar contract.

The Chicago Tribune is speculating that Nevin could get some playing time at catcher while Michael Barrett is serving his suspension which could begin as early as the upcoming weekend.

    I would definately call it a great trade. Cubs are losing nothing in Hairston and they are getting paid to take Phil Nevin? Great trade! You will see... Oh, and did anyone see Juan Cruz tonight? Glad to see him do well, I think he went 8 scoreless.

    I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think we'll get much out of Nevin. Arlington is one of the best parks for hitters in the majors and Nevin was barely hitting over the Mendoza line there. We didn't give up much so I suppose its worth the risk, but I would not call it a "great" trade.

    Very good trade by Hendry. All we gave up was that useless Hairston. Interesting irony, now Phil Nevin has the most home runs on the Cubs -_-;;

    I like it a lot and echo the sentiments about some power off the bench late. Also, he is struggling right now but his career stats are much better than his current averages. Also, he was much better in the NL before his recent switch to the Rangers and the AL.

    And all we gave up was Hairston? Nice.

    I also agree with Jason B. Needed it a month ago.

    Now if we need a long Ball late in the game, this is a much better chance than: Hairston, Perez, Bynum.Plus, Nevin could spell Jones, Murton give Lee a Break (no pun) every now and then. The Cubs had to many 25th man types already. Good deal!

    This is too late to really help with Lee, except for maybe two more weeks or so...but note that he has also played catcher, and would help during Barrett's suspension. Womack freed up Hairston to be traded. Good move alone for Barrett's suspension, but would have been better 4 weeks ago.
