A Sunday Split…In the Minors

Minor League Report – 05/22/06

The Iowa Cubs beat the Fresno Grizzlies (San Francisco Giants) 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in Fresno. Mark Watson went to 2-0 on the season in relief of Les Walrond and David Aardsma picked up his 4th save of the season. The I-Cubs are 6 games back of the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers) and in second place in the division with an 18-24 record.

The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx lost to the Mobile BayBears (San Diego Padres) 3-1 in Jackson on Sunday. Rocky Cherry took the loss in relief of Randy Wells. The Diamond Jaxx are now 3 games back of the Chattanooga Lookouts (Cincinnati Reds) and in second place in the division.

Iowa Cubs – The I-Cubs have won their last 5 out of 6 and Sunday’s victory was another come from behind win. The Cubs were down 2-1 in the 7th and Augie Ojeda scored the tying run on a throwing error by catcher Yamid Haad on a pick-off attempt with Felix Pie at the plate. Michael Restovich scored the winning run after a 1-out double and a single by Casey McGehee put runners on 1st and 3rd. Recently promoted Luis Montanez recorded the game winning RBI on a sacrifice bunt that scored Restovich from 3rd. Felix Pie was 0-4 with 3 strike outs and a RBI (29) dropping his season average to .264. Buck Coats was also 0-5 and after a tremendous start to his AAA season, Micah Hoffpauir went 0-4. In Hoffpauir’s 3 previous games with the I-Cubs he has 3 home runs and is 5-9 with 3 RBI’s.

West Tenn Diamond Jaxx - The Diamond Jaxx pounded out 7 hits, but only 1 run, a solo home run off the bat of Scott Moore. Rocky Cherry allowed 2 runs in 8th on home runs by Luis Cruz and George Kottaras. Eric Patterson was 0-4, Brandon Sing was 2-4 and recently acquired Miguel Negron was 1-3 in his West Tenn debut.

The future is looking bright….
