Minor League Report – 05/17/06

The Iowa Cubs won their second straight game on Tuesday with a 4-1 victory over the Salt Lake City Bees (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) and for the second straight day it was runs late in the game that led to the victory.

The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx lost 9-7 to the Montgomery Biscuits (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) 9-7 on Tuesday. The Diamond Jaxx were ahead 7-2 going into the bottom of the 7th and allowed 7 runs in the final 2 innings. Bobby Brownlie took the loss in relief.

Iowa Cubs – Coming off of Ryan O’Malley’s masterpiece on Monday where he had a no-hitter into the 5th, the I-Cubs rallied late to beat the Bees in Iowa at Principal Park. Les Walrond gave up 1 run in 6 innings of work. He allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 8. Kerry Ligtenberg and Mark Watson threw 2 scoreless innings and David Aardsma picked up his 3rd save of the year. The I-Cubs scored 4 runs in the 7th after being shutout in the first six by Jered Weaver (Jeff Weaver’s brother). Weaver only gave up 4 hits, but Jonathon Rouwenhorst could not hold the lead and gave up 4 runs in a third of an inning of work. Felix Pie went 2-5 with a run scored and Buck Coats was 1 for 4 on the afternoon.

The Iowa Cubs are 15-22 on the year, 3rd place and 6 1/2 games back of the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers).

West Tenn Diamond Jaxx – West Tenn played well but the bullpen was unable to hold the lead for Randy Wells. Paul Schappert gave up 5 runs on 5 hits without recording an out in the 7th inning and Brownlie allowed the 5th run of the inning off the bat of Michael Coleman that scored the tying run and then surrendered a 2-run home run to Jeremy Owens in the 8th for the final two runs of the ballgame. Luis Montanez went 2 for 5 with a home run; Scott Moore added 2 hits, including a home run and Gary Cates went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored.

The Diamond Jaxx are 24-16 on the year, 2nd place and 1 game back of the Chattanooga Lookouts (Cincinnati Reds).
