Kerry Wood (0-0, -.--) vs. Ramon Ortiz (0-4, 6.30)

The long awaited season debut of 'Kid K'. Kerry Wood is expected to make his first start since July 20, 2005 today against the Washington Nationals as the Cubs go for the series sweep. The Cubs Faithful have doubted this day would ever come, but it is here and it is time once again to root for Kerry and the Cubs. According to several reports, Wood has really worked on improving his mechanics that have led to the injury problems he has had over his very storied career. The addition of Wood today to the active roster should add to the confidence the Cubs have built over the last two games against the Nationals.

Kerry Wood is spent the better part of the last two seasons on the DL since he led the Major League in strikeouts in 2003 (266). Wood was 14-11 with a 3.20 ERA in 32 games, but since then he has only pitched in 43 games and only 10 starts in 2005; 8-9/3.72 in 2004, 3-4/4.23 in 2005....but this is a new season and a fresh start for Wood.

The Cubs pitching staff has held the Nationals scoreless in the first 2 games of the series and Alfonso Soriano has only 1 hit in the series. Carlos Zambrano and Sean Marshall only allowed only 5 hits in 14 innings of work and their great performances allowed Dusty to give his overworked bullpen a much-needed rest which will benefit the Cubs today with Wood making his first start in almost 10 months.

The Cubs' offense is coming off its best back-to-back games since Derrek Lee went down and although they have only recorded 17 hits in 2 games....they made them count and have scored 9 runs. After a 4-walk performance on Tuesday, the Cubs added 4 more on Wednesday and the more pitches they continue to take the more successful they will continue to be. Ramon Ortiz has allowed 11 runs and 11 walks in 17 1/3 innings over his last 3 starts. Ortiz does not have a decision in 2 career starts, with a 3.38 ERA, against the Cubs.

Will he or won't he? Aramis Ramirez left Wednesday's game with a mild lower back strain and without Ramirez in the line-up and a day game after a night game, Barrett could get the day off....let's hope Jacque Jones got a good night's sleep. Juan Pierre has come around in the first 2 games of the series and has recorded 4 hits....if Ramirez is out, Pierre must lead the offense the way he is capable of.

A sweep would be more than nice before heading to the Wrongside of Chicago.

Feel free to share you favorite Kerry Wood memory...here at the CCO!!

Let's Talk Cubbies Baseball....

    Attention all:

If Rusch is now know as "Glooroo" then we should have a new nickname for Mr. Neifi Perez.

    My nomination is "Rally Killer".

Great move batting the Rally Killer in the 6th spot...always good to put the sub .200 hitters in front of the consistent .285 hitter.

  • Steve

A Bunt?!?!?!?!?!? Neifi Perez just bunted with runners at first ant third with 2 outs in the ninth. What in the world are you thinking!?!?!? You suck Neifi!!! This is your number 6 hitter today, Dusty. Good Move.

  • Anthony

Sorry about the double post, a compter glitch (it's never the user, right?). I know I'm not watching the game, but it sounds like Wood did okay. Yes, he gave up 3 HR's, but NO WALKS and 6 K's. If we had scored some runs off Ortiz, I think most people would agree Wood's first start was a success.

Neil, are you watching? Anyone? How did Wood look?

  • Anthony

It's not Wood giving up runs that is driving me nuts, it's the fact that Ortiz is 0-4 with an ERA of 6.00 and we haven't been able to do anything against hiim yet. We're not taking pitches. It goes back to what Jason said. We had some momentum and then Dusty goes and changes the lineup.

  • Hubert

What made Wood dominant in '03 was the fact that he was a straight up 4-seam fastball, slider, curve pitcher. Now he's throwing all these other pitches, change, 2-seam that he doesn't have control of. His 2-seamer has movement from the edge back to the middle. It is really annoying. If anything, with Wood's stuff he should be a 4-seam, slider, curve, split pitcher..

Wood really needs to stop throwing that 2-seam fastball, it doesn't fit his pitching style. 88-90 is not a velocity he should be throwing when he can pump 94-98mph with the 4-seamer and blow people away.

  • Trevor

Good thing the bullpen is halfway fresh after good performances from Z and Marshall. We're going to need them today a little early. A lot of pitches thrown for Wood, and I would imagine he's on a limited pitch count.

  • WOW, another one to Soriano...all fastballs.

  • Anthony

Jason, I ABSOLUTELY agree. Why would you mess with the lineup? I can see sitting someone bc of the night/day thing, but why bat him 6th? UGH !!

I'm not watching, only listening, but it sounds like Wood really got whacked in the 2nd and threw a LOT of pitches (27). Hopefully we can score some runs, but with this lineup.... ???

  • Trevor

I can't watch the game, I'm at work. Is the wind blowing out at all today? Did Woody just hang something up there for the homer or what happened?

  • Anthony

I don't think I've ever seen Woody have an 8 pitch inning !!

  • Jason B. from AZ

    Neil,

Can you confirm Neifi is in the 6th spot?

Didn't the Cubs just win two games in a row, and didn't the offense just wake up a bit over those two games?

Why on Earth would Baker go and ruin momentum like that, by messing with the lineup and putting Neifi in the 6th spot?!

Honestly...this guy is begging to get fired, as far as I am concerned. When the Cubs win, they will win in spite of Dusty, and not because of him.

Woody wins today, then Maddux wins the next game...nice 4 game winning streak is upon us!

  • Steve

Woody was so dominant in that series. Absolutly lights out. I'll never forget it.

Why on earth is Dusty batting Neifi in the 6th spot? How about Murton or Mabry? Heck, Kerry Wood would make a better 6th hitter than Perez.

  • jim (tinley park) via atlantic

I'm on the road heading to Atlantic City.

My favorite Wood Moment? Easy, game 5 vs Atlanta.

8 Innings of power pitching, clutch hitting and non-stop camera shots of Sara Wood in the stands.

For the first time in my life time the Chicago Cubs win a play off series. I still get chills when I think about it.
