Game Thirty: Cubs (14-15) vs. Padres (15-15)
Game Time – 3:05pm C.T. Comcast SportsNet, WGN Radio, XM Radio Channel 188
Location – PETCO Park, San Diego, CA
Angel Guzman (0-1, 5.91) vs. Woody Williams (2-1, 3.06)
Angel Guzman goes to the mound today for the Cubs in search of his first Major League victory and to end the Cubs 5-game losing streak, the longest of the season. Guzman has pitched well in his two previous starts but control has been his problem. Guzman has the stuff to get Major League hitters out, but he has not been as aggressive as he should be. Guzman had a 90-pitch outing against the Pirates on Tuesday and he looks to continue the fine pitching performances the Cubs have gotten in the series by Carlos Zambrano and Sean Marshall. Cubs pitching has only allowed 3 runs in two games, but the offense has only scored once in that same span. According to Cubs.com, the offense is 4 for 56 (.071 average) in the last eight games and 0 for 13 on Saturday. Once what was a strength of the team has become its worst nightmare. The Cubs were getting that clutch hit at the beginning of the season and it seemed like a different player was stepping up to the task every game, but as of late the Cubs have not been as fortunate with their timely hitting.
The Cubs just need a breakout game, one that will loosen everyone up and allow them to play the way they can. The Cubs have the tools to win and be successful they just have to believe they can first. While the Cubs are struggling, so is the rest of the central. The Cubs are still only 5 games back of the Reds and there is plenty of time to right the ship.
Dusty has mixed up the lineup the first four games of this road trip; will he try something new again today is the question. The Cubs need a spark, a game where all the calls and bounces go their way and a pitching performance to hold the opposition while the offense, and the team, gains some much needed confidence.
Score some runs, get a win and most importantly have fun….those are the keys for Sunday.
