Derrek Lee in a Cast for At Least Six Weeks

According to a report from Bruce Levine on ESPN Radio in Chicago, Derrek Lee has two fractures in his wrist and will be in a cast for 6 weeks with rehab to follow.

Updated - 6:56pm / 9:28pm - A report just out in the Chicago Tribune by Paul Sullivan is reporting Derrek Lee could be out for the next 2-3 months and will be placed on the 15-day DL on Friday at that time Cubs will announce a call-up from the Minors to take his place on the roster.

Derrek Lee suffered a fracture of the distal radial bone and the distal ulna bones while trying to brace himself for Rafael Furcal.

Updated - 9:28pm - Although the time frames have varied, it is official....Derrek Lee is out indefinitely according to a report on Cubs.com. So while the Cubs will search for a temporary replacement for D-Lee I have a message for all of the Cubs Faithful....

Come In Off the Ledge and Remember....Don't Panic!!!

Everybody take a deep breath,OK? You heard it here first, Walker will fill in for Lee. He played first for Boston. Also, he bat is HOT....We'll get or this hump in the road......

  • David

    Matt,

The guy that had a good spring, his name has slipped my mind, but he was injured the first week and out for the year.

  • Trevor the rumor on the call-up is Michael Restovich, Ryan Theriot or Brandon Sing. Neither Restovich or Sing is on the 40-man roster and both have struggled at AAA, although Restovich has been on a tear as of late. Theriot has played well and would provide another option in the infield.

Todd Walker and John Mabry will probably get the most work at first base from what I have read and heard....but Hendry could always do something that no one has seen coming.

Sing is not ready and while Restovich has Major League experience, Todd Walker played better than Restovich did at first base during Spring Training.

The other rumor is Jeff Deardorff. He is hitting .313 at Iowa with a .353 OBP and a .563 SLG with 2 home runs and 3 RBI's in 11 games.

    Sing's numbers: .200/.319/.275/1/3

    Restovich's numbers: .333/.407/.604/2/10

    Theriot's numbers: .340/.390/.358/0/8

Im not sure the name but doesnt the Cubs have that stud at first base in the minors? Everyone says hes super capable of bein a major leaguer but because of Lee's status, he wont get a call up...COuld someone mail me his name at punkbrokenlove@aol.com...and lemme know if he may get called up..Thank you

  • Trevor

So who gets called up? Man this sucks bad. Talk about us fans not getting down, the Cubs team had better keep their heads up or they will get their butts handed to them by the Cards at the new Busch stadium.

  • Mike

As much as I couldnt stand Furcal after he signed for "more money" with the Dodgers, I must say he is now #2 next to Bartman for the time being...You don't just run into a first baseman like that.

  • David

    one more thing;

    "theres no crying in baseball"

    -A League of Their Own

  • David

Put it this way....if we are a World Series team with Lee, then we can definitly at least hang around playoff position without him.

I have a good feeling about this team. The Bullpen has been good, and suprisingly our starting pitching has been decent thus far. There is some added leadership and energy on this team and something tells me this team may be able to fight through adversity for once. With Wood, Prior and Miller coming back, we are going to be fine. We can only hope they will be at full strength, but then again, we are all cubs fans, hope is a very prevelant word in our vocabulary, so this should be nothing new.

Time for Barrett and A-Ram to show us why they are premiere players in this league.

  • Bobby

Is it just me..... or did anybody else cry when they heard this?

  • a

Don't sweat it yet, Jim. Its not over till it's over.

  • jim (tinley park)

This Sucks! We are cursed, this season is over.

  • Anthony

    Hey Neil,

It's official, this was just reported on Cubs.com:

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee has a fractured right hand and will be in a cast for up to six weeks, the team announced late Thursday.

Lee has a fracture of the distal radial and the distal ulna bone in his hand. He will wear an immobilizing cast that will go past his elbow. Team officials won't speculate on how long Lee will be sidelined, but he could be out two to three months.

I haven't been this down since the 03' Playoffs.

  • Scott

Well that's wonderful, we'll get the DL triplettes back on board and a player who plays 155 games per year goes on the 60 Day DL
