Carlos Zambrano (0-1, 3.97) vs. Jason Vargas (1-1, 7.20)

Home Sweet Home....Carlos Zambrano is going for his first win of the season tonight against the Florida Marlins. Tonight will be Juan Pierre's first game against his former team....although only two of his ex-teammates remain. Joe Girardi makes his return to Wrigley and his first trip back as the Manager of the Marlins.

This is the first game of a eight-game home stand that includes games with the Brewers and the Pirates. The Marlins are one of those teams the Cubs are supposed to beat and those are the teams the Cubs always have a hard time with. Anything less than a series win would be a huge disappointment to the Cubbies.

Jason Vargas has had control problems the entire season and has walked 13 in just 15 innings of work. The Cubs' offense has to show patience against Vargas and allow him to beat himself. The Cubs are ranked last in the National League in walks and patience tonight against Vargas is the key to victory.

The Marlins 'fire sale' over the winter made all of the headlines and rumors out of Florida are suggesting that Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera are on the trading block already this season. Reports out of the Cincinnati area are indicating the Reds have shown interest in Willis; but there are not any rumors concerning the future of Cabrera. Cabrera has always hit the Cubs well and he is the only proven threat in the Marlins lineup. As long as Zambrano pitches the way he as capable and does not take the Fish lightly Zambrano should pick up his first victory of the year.

Aramis Ramirez and Jacque Jones must use this home stand to get back on track and leave the Mendoza Line well behind.

This series is VERY important to the Cubs; winners beat the teams they are supposed to beat....no matter who is in the lineup.

Let's Talk Cubbies Baseball....

    CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN!

    Nice comeback.

  • Matt Haggard

I caught that..I still have a place in my heart for Nomar...Glad to see him wup up on a div. rival ^.^ YES!

  • Hey guys...Nomar just hit a Grand Slam to beet Brad Lidge and the Astros...maybe he can help the Cubs win the division after all.

  • Ryan

Guys, I didnt get a chance to read any of the posts during the game but caused me nothing but pure, raw humor in its purest form. It truly sounded like it was coming out of a cubs fans mouth. Although Z had some trouble with his command early and got in a bit trouble in some of the innings he showed the glimmer of the old Z we have come to know by getting out of jams. We also heard the announcers talking about how he may have become too tame but it was great to watch him snapthat bat Bo Jackson style and watch him pump his fists after getting 12 huge K's. Although he didnt get the W tonight don't get down on the guy. Any normal day 3 would have been plenty to gather a win, especially against the Marlins. Keep your head up and as always......GO CUBBIES!

  • Trevor

The scary thing is, I DO sell stock for a living.

Just kidding of course. :) If anyone is ever in Des Moines and wants to watch the Ryu and the rest of Triple A Iowa Cubs, let me know. Beer and I-Cubs spell a great summer!

  • Anthony...I will be here tomorrow.

What a comeback...build on this guys!!!!

  • Anthony

Jason, that was well deserved, no harm taken !!

I am going nuts here in NW Indiana over the win, especially considering my brother (Die hard Sox fan) called to razz me when it was looking dim for us. And I do believe that we will have a winning homestand after such a big win. I still, however, stand by everything I said; Zambrano didn't pitch as well as his numbers will show (like all his previous starts) and that it would have been a really painful loss. We will never have to prove me wrong though, because we won won won today. So many key hits in the 8th. How about we start a little earlier in the game tomorrow so you, Neil and the rest of the Cubs faithful don't have to listen to us *&^##@ the whole game. haha

    Go Cubs !!

Oh, and yes I would love to have that beer with you guys. I may be there tomorrow.

  • Matt Haggard

Heh, Ive been silent in my sadness watchin this game, but Im here and Im back out of my emo stage..How ironic, a comeback, 8th inning, Wrigley Field, mult. runs agaisnt the Marlins with espn constantly runnin an angle about it..Sweet irony..CUBS WIN!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!

  • Jason B. from AZ

Oh...I forgot to mention that I agree about Zambrano and the WBC completely. I think the WBC should be after the season, or not at all...don't mess with Spring Training!

Also, great news about Guzman...we should all pray for a shutout thrown by him, as that would be the first step towards seeing the last of Glooroo!!

I am going to my Fantasy League and picking up Guzman tonight.

  • Jason B. from AZ

    Hey Trevor and Anthony,

I am sure Neil and I would be glad to have a beer with you at the park sometime, but I am not sure either of you would trust you with our money if you were stock brokers:

    Anthony/Trevor: sell sell...markets gonna crash!!

    Anthony/Trevor: no...wait...buy, buy, buy!!!

    Anthony/Trevor: oh crap...what was I thinking...sell!!!!

Anthony/Trevor: Good Lord...the Dow is gonna hit 90,000 at this rate!!! Buy, baby, buy!!!!

Just messing with you guys...I really appreciate all your posts and enthusiasm. You are obviously true Cubs fans, or you wouldn't care so much...just try and keep some perspective, as the game ain't over till it's over!

  • Anthony

"If the Cubs come back and win this game, we will go on to easily come away with a winning homestand... Mark my words". Looks like we're in for a winning homestand... MOMENTUM BABY !!!!!!!!

    Go Cubs !!!!

  • Trevor

Ok, its really hard to stay mad at Jones when he does stuff like that! Nail it down Dempster, the Cubs just started this homestand on a emotional high!

  • Jacque Jones...Ronny Cedeno...Matt Murton, a 6th run 8th...way to go boys.

Trevor you asked about Guzman, I have read and Guzman has been announced as the starter on Wednesday. The only catch was if Dusty had to use him tonight then they were going to call up Rich Hill.

Also, Trevor your point with Zambrano and the WBC has been running through my head as well.

  • Trevor

WOOOOO HOOOO!!!!! That a boy Murton! What a great night for him, patient at the plate, drew the walks earlier in the game and then comes through in the clutch. Sweet.

  • THE JUAN PIERRE FACTOR...let the young team beat themselves guys.

  • Sorry I've been quiet guys....way to go Juan...let's go Ramirez time to break out of the slump...

  • Anthony

I wouldn't say be pitched horribly, but he didn't pitch like a #1 starter. 3 runs doesn't sound bad, but how many times does Carpenter or Oswalt give up 3 runs. Do you think Willis is going to give up 3 runs tomorrow? And let's not forget these are the Marlins, one of the worst teams in the NL.

Also, 2 runs in the first inning gets the players heads down. The first inning is big, it sets the tone of the game. Just like the first game of a series or homestand sets the tone.

If the Cubs come back and win this game, we will go on to easily come away with a winning homestand. If, however, we lose we will have a losing homestand. Mark my words.

  • Trevor

Looks like its me and you Anthony! I'm not sure who I'm more mad at: Zambrano for being happy with his performance or the Cubs hitters for making Vargas look like Cy Young. I'm going with the Offense because even though Z was shaky at best, he still only gave up 3. I'll take that most days. We just need to hit the stinkin' ball!

  • Anthony

Neil & Jason, you've been awfully quiet tonight.

Am I the only one who is bothered that Zambrano is so fired up after pitching a medicore game? 12 Strikeouts means nothing in a team game. I've never seen a pitcher so happy that is about to lose a game. I don't get it. Am I missing something?

  • Trevor

Seriously, Vargas walks Murton on 4 straight pitches and then Jones swings at the first pitch he sees. COME ON! Make him throw some strikes, he's obviously starting to struggle a bit with his command. Vargas is not as good as the Cubs are making him look. The only thing he hasn't done is hit a home run yet, (maybe Glendon can relieve and grant him that as well).

  • Anthony

I want to apologize for sounding so negative, I just reread my comments and I feel like I sound like one of those lunatics. While I am not a negative person by any stretch of the imagination, I am a realist and not overly optimistic when it comes to the Cubs. I am just so incredibly frustrated. Vargas has a 7.20 ERA and has walked 13 people this year and only struck out 9 and here we sit without a single hit in the 5th inning.

I was so positive before the game started. With a win in the first game, the pressue is totally on the other team as we would only have to win 1 more to get the series win. If we don't come back in this game, and there hasn't been a single thing to make us think we will, we will have ALL the pressure on us with 2 unproven starters to finish the series. Oh, and did I mention we have to face Willis tomorrow ?

  • Anthony

Trevor, he got through 13 pitches, but swung at ball 4 no less than 3 times.

Nice walk to Jacobs. Typical Z. Looked great in the 2nd inning, but it only takes 1 or 2 bad innings to get the loss. This is his 5th start for gooness sake and he'll be 0-2 to show for it. What a joke. He's got a lot of KO's though, I guess that's okay then ?????????? NOT !!!!!!!!!

  • Trevor

That was a decent at bat by Ramirez though, he made him throw 13 pitches. Patience will lead to hits.

  • jim (tinley park)

Maybe the position players should throw their hands up in the air in disgust after Zambrano threw a cookie to Cabrera. Then the idiot smiles, like it is a joke. Nice job Z. **** you!

  • Trevor

Anyone think that maybe Zambrano should have stayed in Spring Training with the rest of the team so he could work on mechanics and fundamentals rather than playing in the WBC????

  • Anthony

Another walk, another bomb. The biggest difference in losing D-Lee ??? Well, if we were down 2-0 with Lee in the lineup I wouldn't be afraid for a second. With Lee out, I feel like we're down 10-0. An what in the world happened to Zambrano. Perhaps aliens came down and took over his body. 27 pitches in the first inning means another high pitch count just to finish 5 innings, if he goes that far. I thought this guy wanted to win the Cy Young. It looks like he'll be fighting to finish .500. Could Zambrano actually have turned out to be a fluke this past few years? Man I hope not.

  • Trevor

If we don't go at least 6-2 on this homestand I will be very dissapointed. Neil, do you know how we are planning on using Guzman yet? I like him coming up but I would rather have Williams in the bullpen than Rusch. Williams sucked starting last time but he looked decent in the pen earlier in the year.
