The Cubs Spring Training Report – Rockies Top Cubs

Game Eight: Cubs 2 – Rockies 6

The Colorado Rockies beat the Cubs today in Tucson, 6 to 2. Jerome Williams had a rough three innings. Williams allowed 6 runs on 8 hits; all earned. The Cubs did not make any errors on Thursday but were shutout for four innings by Jason Jennings. Jennings only gave up 2 hits and struck out three. Jacque Jones and Matt Murton both had doubles and Michael Restovich had an RBI single to end the shutout in the 7th inning. Mark Prior did throw batting practice on Thursday.

More from the game and the news of the day from Mesa….

Juan Pierre got the day off and Felix Pie got the start in center but was held hitless. Ronny Cedeno went 1 for 3 but the Cubs could only tally 6 hits on Thursday in Tucson. Jerome Williams allowed all six of the Rockies runs; Scott Williamson, Bobby Howry, Les Walrond, Jae Kuk Ryu and Brian Boehringer all contributed and did not allow the Rockies to add to their total. Williamson did walk two and allow two base hits.

Jerome Williams looked better in his first start than on Thursday, although he was credited for the loss against the Giants as well. Williams needs to have a good outing his next time out, not for the Cubs but for himself. Williams is a good pitcher he just needs to build his confidence. Could the ineffectiveness of both Jerome Williams and Glendon Rusch over the past two games have anything to do with Michael Barrett and Henry Blanco playing in the WBC? Williams was the first Cubs’ pitcher to get an at bat this spring, the Rockies chose not to use the designated hitter.

Angel Pagan continued his hot streak on Thursday. He added another hit to his already impressive spring numbers. Matt Padgett made his spring debut, going 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter. Here are Padgett’s stats from the Baseball Cube. Brian Dopirak also continued his impressive spring he went 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Friday – The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at HoHoKam

Rich Hill vs. John Lackey

The Angels will be playing with a split squad against the Cubs on Friday, the other half will be at Tempe Diablo Stadium facing the Oakland A’s. Rich Hill needs to build on the start he had last Sunday against the Giants. Both Rich Hill and Angel Guzman have looked better to this point of Spring Training than Glendon Rusch and Jerome Williams. Ronny Cedeno needs to continue to relax and not let the pressure of succeeding get to him.

The News from Mesa

Mark Prior did throw on Thursday according to and Larry Rothschild will wait to see how the right hander feels on Friday before he schedules another session for Prior. Prior’s velocity was O.K. and he did throw some breaking balls and changeups.

Jerry Hairston is expected to play on Friday for the first time since getting hit in the head last Sunday.

Roberto Novoa is out with pneumonia.

Several reports out of Chicago are saying Jim Hendry and Casey Close, Derrek Lee’s agent, are talking about a contract extension for the All-Star first baseman. Several reports indicate the extension could be done before the season starts on April 3rd.

Well that’s the news….and I’m sticking to it!!
