This Week in Cubs History – 03/19/06

March 19th – March 25th

The last full week of March, Opening Day for Major League Baseball is in 14 days, the Cubs begin the 2006 season in 15 days. Shaun will be in Mesa this week and I will be in Cincinnati on Opening Day and 3/4 of the CCO will be in Chicago for opening weekend….stay tuned for a new feature coming soon to the CCO….Talkin’ Cubs Live.

This was the week the spot was created for an unknown shortstop named Ernie Banks. So here is to a week closer to Opening Day and now to the way back machine….

March 19

1989 – The Yankees traded Joel Skinner and a Minor Leaguer to the Indians for Mel Hall (1981-1984)
1965 – Cubs radio announcer Jack Quinlan (1956-1964) was killed in Arizona when he lost control of his car and slammed into back of a truck. Quinlan was returning from a golf outing.
1955 – The Cubs sold Dave Cole (1954) to the Phillies

March 20

2002 – The Brewers traded Henry Blanco (2005 to present) to the Braves for Paul Bako (2003-2004) and Jose Cabrera
1955 – The Cubs beat their Los Angeles farm team 7-0 in Arizona and the Giants beat the Indians 7-3 in Wrigley Field. A rematch of the previous year’s World Series teams drew a crowd of 24,434 to Wrigley.
1954 – The Cubs traded Roy Smalley (1948-1953) to the Braves for Dave Cole (1954). This trade paved the wave for Ernie Banks to become the Cubs starting shortstop.

1997 – The Baltimore Orioles traded Manny Alexander (1997-1999) and Scott McClain (2004-2005) to the New York Mets for Hector Ramirez

March 23

2000 – The Cardinals traded Kent Bottenfield (1996-1997) and Adam Kennedy to the Angels for Jim Edmonds
2000 – The Cubs traded Rodney Myers (1996-1999) to the Padres for Gary Matthews, Jr. (2000-2001)
1974 – The Cubs traded Jim Hickman (1968-1973) to the Cardinals for Scipio Spinks (1974)
1966 – Mike Remlinger, born
1959 – The Giants traded Bill White and Ray Jablonski to St. Louis for Sam Jones (1955-1956)

March 24

1962 – The Phillies traded Andy Carey and Lou Vassie to the White Sox for Cal McLish (1949, 1951)

March 25

1997 – The Braves traded David Justice and Marquis Grissom (2006) to the Indians for Kenny Lofton (2003) and Alan Embree
1989 – The Pirates traded Felix Fermin (1996) to the Indians for Jay Bell
1985 – An Illinois judge ruled that state and city laws which effectively banned night games at Wrigley Field were constitutional. The Cubs had sued to overturn the laws after being forced to give up a home game during the 1984 NLCS. The Cubs also threatened to play future post-season games at another stadium to accommodate the networks schedule.
1981 – The Braves traded Gary Matthews (1984-1987, Coach 2003 to present) to the Phillies for Bob Walk
1963 – Philadelphia purchased Johnny Klippstein (1950-1954) from the Reds
1962 – Elvin Tappe (1954-1956, 1958, 1960, 1962, Manager 1962) was added to the College of Coaches
1935 – The Cubs sold Pat Malone (1928-1934) to the Yankees
1891 – Albert G. Spalding retired from active participation from the Chicago National League Ball Club, Inc. and the National League. James A. Hart became the new president of the future Cubs.

Maybe, just maybe the Cubs will make some history this week….now Back to the Future
