Cubs Sign Right-Hander Jason Simontacchi

According to a report on Cubs.com, the Cubs officially signed Jason Simontacchi on Friday afternoon. The Cubs signed him to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training. For details on Simontacchi, see the post from earlier today (scroll down).

Check back for updates on additional signings.

  • Greg thanks for posting the update on Simontachi. I have been so busy with Spring Training I have let the updates slip a little. There is so much going on here...

Here are a few more updates: John Mabry has a sore back and Scott Eyre has a sore neck. Neither one have participated in the Spring Training games yet. I saw Scott Eyre and John Mabry on Thursday and both were in street clothes. The Cubs need both of these guys to be healthy when the season starts.

Thanks for the update on this, at least we didn't lose anything on him.

  • Greg

The Cubs voided the contract with Jason after a battery of tests were done. The results weren't publicized, but Jason no longer is a Cub.

I'm not surprised by this since it was rumored a week ago, but I'm not impressed by this either. There really isn't any openings available and if he's going to knock someone off the roster, he's going to have to stun us in spring training.

I don't expect to see him around by April

First Miller then Simontachi..In my opinion they are both good risks, and cost us very little. I'm uneasy about how our roster looks like at the beginning of the season but encouraged at what it could be a couple months into it. While this might be optimistic, one of these guys have to pan out this year!
