Cubs Off-Season Rumors – Chapter Eight

More Cubs Rumors

The Cubs Rumor Mill and Hot Stove were very slow on Saturday. The main rumor was about Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell going to the Texas Rangers. Josh Beckett going to the American League would be just fine with me. All of the Chicago papers seem to have ‘all of the answers’ to the questions we have all been asking. I have updates on Juan Pierre, Rafael Furcal, Nomar Garciaparra and Kevin Mench.

Before we get started, I am not much of a College Football fan, but the Vanderbilt Commodores beat the Tennessee Volunteers for the first time today since 1982. I would like to congratulate Coach Bobby Johnson and the rest of the ‘Dores.

Now back to the Cubbies….

Rafael Furcal was all over the papers on Saturday. There was a report out of New York that stated the Mets are shifting their interest in Furcal to others players. According to that report the Cubs are close to a deal with Furcal. The Chicago Tribune reported ‘General manager Jim Hendry said he doesn’t believe his pursuit of shortstop Rafael Furcal will be affected by the decision of Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones to have his contract restructured to help the Braves in their off-season pursuits. No offer has been made, but Furcal’s agent, Paul Kinzer, knows how far the Cubs will go.’

The Sun-Times said the Chicago White Sox are interested in Juan Pierre and the Sox might have what the Marlins are looking for….relief pitching. The Marlins are not sure if they are going to trade Pierre, but they are very interested in left-handed reliever Demaso Marte. Marte was discussed at last year’s trading deadline with the Marlins. The proposed trade would have sent Marte to the Marlins for A.J. Burnett. The Marlins are also interested in Aaron Rowand. Ken Rosenthal from Fox Sports.com said on Saturday the Cubs could get Pierre for a top pitching prospect. The trade would reduce the Marlins payroll and would help them prepare for the future.

There are more rumors floating around about Kevin Mench. Reports are coming in that would send Mench to the Cubs for an additional player, possibly Corey Patterson, and an additional pitching prospect to complete the trade for Jon Leicester (so a 3 for 1 deal). Stay tuned to this one. I still think if this trade goes through Mench would give the Cubs a fine right fielder, but trading for Juan Pierre should be the Cubs next priority after acquiring Mench.

The Chicago Tribune reported the agent for Nomar Garciaparra, Arn Tellem, has spoken with the Los Angeles Angels about Nomar playing third base and with the Baltimore Orioles about signing Nomar. Nomar wants to play the infield and in Baltimore there is Miguel Tejada and Melvin Mora….I do not understand this. Jim Hendry has said if Nomar is willing to play in the outfield, he could possibly return to the Cubs. Where would Nomar fit in with the Orioles?

Well, that’s the news (Cubs rumors) and I’m sticking to it!!
