Cubs Off-Season Rumors – Chapter Seven

More Cubs Rumors

The Cubs Rumor Mill and Hot Stove slowed down a little on Friday. Most of the buzz around the Cubs was the signing of Scott Eyre. There was a new name added to the Cubs Rumor Mill, Cleveland Indians free agent reliever Bob Howry. I do have updates on Rafael Furcal, A.J. Burnett and Billy Wagner.

I have read a lot in the last 24 hours about the reaction of the Cubs Faithful over the signing of Scott Eyre. Believe me, I questioned the amount of the contract….but the Cubs need a veteran left hander in the bullpen to go with Will Ohman. I think this is a very good move. I have heard reports on XM Radio all day confirming my statement. Scott Eyre played in Toronto for Buck Martinez and Buck gave him a lot of praise Friday on the morning show. Eyre was diagnosed with ADD and after he started taking medication he became a better pitcher. Martinez told a story about after Eyre’s first game back….it was great. Martinez said the Cubs made a great pickup. Rob Dibble reiterated the same point on the afternoon show with Kevin Kennedy. I think the Cubs Faithful need to let Scott pitch before passing judgment.

An article from the Daily Herald on Friday mentioned the Cubs are looking at free agent Bob Howry from the Cleveland Indians. The right-hander was 7-4 with a 2.47 ERA in 2005. He pitched in 79 games and held opponents to a .191 batting average. Howry is 32 years hold and broke into the Majors in 1998 with the White Sox and has a career 3.58 ERA. I do not know much about this guy, but his numbers look good. Can someone give me some more info on Bob Howry?

Apparently the Atlanta Braves are now in the Billy Wagner sweepstakes. Chipper Jones renegotiated his contract on Friday to free up money for the Braves to use on a closer or Rafael Furcal. Jones will take a $6 million dollar pay cut for the 2006 season. He also cut his 2007 and 2008 salary from $15 million to $11 million and added an option for the 2009 season worth between $8-$11 million. Jones wants the Braves to be a winning team. The Braves have until December 7th to sign Furcal. Rob Dibble had an interesting comment on Friday’s afternoon show. Dibble does not think Furcal is worth the money he is demanding (5 years / $50 million). Dibble says he cannot make the routine plays and Furcal is a little man who thinks he has power. Where have I heard this before?

The St. Louis Cardinals have entered the A.J. Burnett sweepstakes. The Cardinals feel they are going to lose Matt Morris to free agency. Walt Jocketty (Cardinals GM) and Tony LaRussa both went to Florida this week and met with A.J. Burnett and his agent. According to XM Radio, there are 9 teams interested in Burnett and the Cubs are one of them.

Well, that’s the news (Cubs rumors) and I’m sticking to it!!
