Cubs Off-Season Rumors – Chapter Six

More Cubs Rumors

On the last day of the Owner’s Meeting in Milwaukee, the Cubs Rumor Mill and Hot Stove were in full swing and so was my crystal ball. I have updates on Jason Bay, Johnny Damon, Brian Giles, A.J. Burnett, Kevin Mench, Corey Patterson, Rafael Furcal and Juan Pierre.

There were 2 different articles on Thursday about the ‘player to be named later’ in the Jon Leicester trade. Both the Chicago Tribune and the Daily Southdown mentioned Kevin Mench could possibly be the player to be named later.

The Tribune article states, “With the Cubs also interested in outfielder Kevin Mench and the Rangers trying to bolster their pitching, Daniels and Cubs GM Jim Hendry may be in constant communication for awhile. Mench, who turns 28 in January, isn’t eligible for free agency until after 2008 and would be cost-effective in ’06 with a salary of $2 million or less.” (It is good to know my crystal ball still works. Just remember where you first heard the Leicester deal could possibly include Kevin Mench) And the Daily Southdown article mentions much of the same and adds Corey Patterson’s name to the deal.

The Cubs do not want another Lou Brock situation with Patterson and a move to the American League would mean Patterson could not come back to ‘haunt’ the Cubs, like Brock did. Of all the Patterson trade rumors I have heard, I like this one the most.

Jason Bay signed a 4-year contract extension with the Pirates on Thursday. The 4-year deal has been reported to be worth $18 million dollars.

The Boston Red Sox offered Johnny Damon a 3 year, $30 million dollar contract on Thursday. It must be rough to be Johnny Damon.

Apparently the Yankees REALLY want Brian Giles. According to XM Radio, Yankees’ Manager, Joe Torre, actually called Brian Giles about playing for his team. Unbelievable….does Torre make house calls as well?

The Toronto Blue Jays according to Fox Sports offered A.J. Burnett a 5-year, $50 million dollar contract on Thursday. The Blue Jays have raised their payroll from $50 million to $85 million and have set their sights on Burnett. The Washington Nationals have also joined the Burnett sweepstakes. Why are all these teams making such a big deal about this guy? Career losing record and a history of arm problems….I just do not understand.

Talks with Rafael Furcal are ongoing according to an article in the Daily Southdown. No progress has been made and the Braves have until December 7th to resign Furcal. And according to an article in the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs for their leadoff spot have targeted Juan Pierre as a second choice if they cannot land Furcal. Remember these are rumors. I think if the Cubs trade for Kevin Mench, they have to go after 2 left handed batters to replace Burnitz and Patterson (and possibly Todd Walker). I think the door is still open for both Furcal and Pierre to become Cubs.

Well, that’s the news (Cubs rumors) and I’m sticking to it!!
