Cubs Off-Season Rumors – Chapter Three

More Cubs Rumors

Usually Sundays in November are full of football, but not this year. The Hot Stove and the rumor mills are in full swing. All of the Cubs Faithful want to know (and so do I), who will the Cubs sign? Who will the Cubs trade for? I have never seen an off-season like this before. Is it because the ‘Wrongside’ just won the World Series? Is it because we all love the Cubs? I think it is because we (the fans) just want to see our beloved Cubs in the playoffs and World Series. I once saw a news piece on Red Sox Nation that said if the Sox ever won the World Series then the fans would have nothing to complain about anymore. Is that true about the Cubs Faithful? I do not think so; I just want to see them win.

Well enough of that….here is the latest from the rumor mill….

On the Rafael Furcal front….according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Furcal’s agent is expecting an offer after this weekend and the article still sites the Cubs and Mets as being the front-runners in the Furcal sweepstakes. According to the New York Daily News, “Cubs GM Jim Hendry is poised to satisfy Rafael Furcal’s five-year contract demand….” the article goes on to say the Braves GM is going with a rookie next year to fill Furcal’s shoes at shortstop, but has no idea who will be the Braves new leadoff hitter. And according to the Chicago Tribune, the salary demands that Furcal’s agent (Paul Kinzer) had made earlier in the week were false and the Cubs are still in the hunt for Furcal. The article also states that Furcal would still make $9 to $10 million a year for 5 years and according to my calculator that is a $45 – $50 million dollar contract and that would surpass the extension Ramirez signed at the beginning of the 2005 season. That is all on the Furcal front, but this week should bring about more. I think this will go on until after Thanksgiving….we will all just wait and see.

According to the St. Petersburg Times, the Cubs are interested in Aubrey Huff. Sunday’s article said Huff is in the last year of his contract and will make $6.75 million and he is drawing interest from the Cubs, Mariners, Mets, Pirates, Red Sox and White Sox. The Red Sox are interested in Huff playing first base. I like Aubrey Huff and I think he could be had for very little (Wellemeyer and/or Bartosh), the Devil Rays are not too high on him and he will be a free agent at the end of the year. The Cubs should hold Patterson and Mitre for Juan Pierre.

There is a rumor floating on XM Radio that the Twins are interested in Nomar Garciaparra playing 3B and a little DH for them in 2006. Very interesting….I will keep an eye (and ear) on this one. I still think the Cubs should hold on to Nomar.

Also, XM ran a sound bite from Orioles GM, Mike Flannigan on Sunday. Flannigan stated the Orioles no longer have any interest in retaining the services of Sammy Sosa and he is free to seek another team. Sosa apparently has said he wants to play in 2006 and is hoping to reach the 600-career homerun mark. I wish him the best.

Well, the American League MVP is handed out today and I hope ARod does not win it and the National League MVP goes on Tuesday, I wish it could be Derrek Lee….but more that likely it will be Albert Pujols….too bad that guy is a Cardinal!

Well, that’s the news (Cubs rumors) and I’m sticking to it!!
